I'm never buying a Maxtor ever again. I've had this 250giger for about 2 years now and i think it's finally shitting out. It keeps making this "whining" noise and it keep disapearing. Today i was downloading something to the drive and got a disc error saying it can't store the files and the drive disapeared again!
I have a decently new motherboard with onboard SATA...so i'm thinking this is the newest technology? I should get a SATA drive? I need something that is probally WD and connections by SATA. I need a 250+ giger. I saw that best buy has some on sale for like 80 bucks. What everyone think?

i don't like maxtor nor western digital. Both of mines clicks and are getting slower and slower to respond........
I've had great experiences with Seagates and they are pretty cheap too.

isn't seagate related to maxtor?

If you ask enough people you'll find out all hard drives suck. I hear the most bad about WD. I have 2 Maxtor 200GB and they are working fine 1 1/2 years later of being on pretty much the whole time. I guess Seagate is the way to go shrug

i have a stack of clickign western digital harddrives, and only 2 bad maxtors. So i guess maxtors are good and seagates are even better.
Remember to keep them cool )

I use a few fans, including some harddrive fans that are attached in the bottom of the drive and some case fans near it. They work quite well if you leave your system on for a long time.

I had avoided Maxtor's for years due to the bad rep. I also used to think WDs were great. Well, a WD went bad on me about a month after purchase, and it took a lot of effort for them just to send me a refurbished replacement, so I've crossed them off my list.
However, last years Black Friday sale had some 250G Maxtors's at a price worth the risk, and I haven't had any problems with them yet.
Still, I'd preferrably go with Seagate or Hitatchi if money wasn't an issue.

Seagate has 5 year warranties if I'm not mistaken. I might get a 10K RPM Seagate SCSI for my next computer as my main drive and 2 big old Maxtors as my storage drives...

I'd say watch woot...they have refurbed 250 WD's all the time...I picked one up for $50 and stuck it in a $30 external enclose...portable and it works great to store stuff on that I don't use all the time.

that is a good SATA cable, but just get the standard red one that is like 18 inches, and make sure that your motherboard has an SATA port, if it doesnt you are wasting your time!

awesome, there are either 2 or 4 so you can set up raid. raid is mostly used for servers because you can have several different setups, like abackup system or merging two hard drives into one large one (virtually), kind of like the opposite of a partition.
