not many people care about soccer over here...in every other country soccer is the biggest sport, in America its football or baseball

"Don't use your hands, it's a penalty!"
"Oh! And me must not touch me hands!"
- Joe Rogan (Give it a listen on his album. It's the track about the World Cup)

We have one of the best youth systems for soccer but it just kinda falls off. Our national team does not suck, we just haven't done anything on the world stage yet. We won the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and we're ranked #5 in the world ahead of nations like Portugal (7), France (8 ), Argentina (9), England (10), and Italy (13) which is pretty sweet. We lost to the Czechs but they are awesome and ranked #2 right now so...

my friends all tell me we are ranked so high because we play in bullshit groups to qualify, therefore giving us a false ranking

In America especially. Hockey is dead (Baseball is on life support) so we need a replacement sport and why not pick the sport the rest of the world loves?

I am sure baseball will be fine. That is my favorite. Football will never die and I think that represents America more so than soccer does.

That's kind of true. CONCACAF is bullshit in the overall scheme of things, Mexico is the only decent team in it, besides the US. How you play in the World Cup is what really matters.

Where did you hear that the US has one of the best youth systems (maybe for girls)? I hear of kids being sent to Brazil or Europe for soccer training but not here.
The US has a decent team but the problem here is that there are so many sports kids play. In most of the world, soccer is the main sport kids play while here we divide our time playing football and baseball too. The chances are greater that the phenomenal athletes are taken by other sports.

All these teams are ranked low because they play each other more often through friendlies or world cup qualifying. The US has the strongest opponent in Mexico which is a very ordinary team. They gotto up the performance man - ranked #5, concacaf champs - complete bullshit. Italy is ranked #13 I believe - let's see what happens this saturday.
