well guys it's that time again. My old old old apex (6 years old) is finally hitting the fan. I need a new dvd player that plays the following

cdr
vcd
svcd
dvd+r
xvid (preferred)

I currently have a jvc down stairs that plays all this but wouldn't buy a second. Anyone have any input i'm looking to spend around max $150. Something maybe newer and not to cheap looking.

thx!!

i think there is a toshiba which plays divx and upconverts, on the divx site, there is a list of all the players that play it, you should prob look at that.

The Philips DVP642 is a classic and quite popular. They don't all die, it just depends on which one you get and how you use it.

Phillips also has a new version that does HDMI upconversion, which also plays everything the 642 plays.

When I was building up my home theater system a few months back, I went with what everybody at AVSForums were raving about the Oppo Digital OPD971H player. It does DVI/HDMI upconversion to 1080i as well as plays DivX/Xvid and frequent firmware updates. I've been very happy with it thus far. I see they have an additional model out now.

Mine is the top one. 1080i output to my 60" SXRD is superb.

I only have like a 27in. flat panel tv (its pretty nice) but doesn't have all these outputs or anything for hd. i guess the dvd player i get will get a lot of pushing out of the laser, playing a lot of dvd+r's and vcd's. So i'm not sure what all this dvi/hdmi and upconversion stuff is ...

Heh, mine is an el cheapo APEX that I sought out because it could be region hacked and do PAL to NTSC. On the cheap, it was a great buy.

You basically described the one that is pretty much dead ) did last a long time but now it's time to get something newer and better, seemed like the ones oppodigital is a little more than what i need.

This it?

If it is, I'd try to get it fixed before tossing it. People actually buy broken ones to fix. That's how desired it was. )

I know there's a common capacitor burnout issue with ones getting on in years, but whatever it is, check out this thread before heading to the bin

Nice, but if it can't do PAL to NTSC and be region hacked, I'd pass.

Nice. Like I said, if you can salvage it, it's worth it.

[quoteb186cd64a2="manofice"]well if my dvd's are ntsc...i wouldn't need it to do pal to ntsc right?[/quoteb186cd64a2]

True. This, and other APEX models, were popular for being uber-easy to hack for foreign DVDs. If you don't have any, nor plan on getting any, then it's not that vital a requirement for you. I, on the other hand, have several UK DVDs, so I needed it.

[quoteb186cd64a2="manofice"]Edit and how will i kow if it does pal to ntsc[/quoteb186cd64a2]

It should say in the specs. I didn't see that in the Phillips you listed.

Specs, once i get a HD tv this player might be good for this. It lists pal and ntsc but i don't own any uk dvds.

Sounds good, but is there a region hack for it?

That may not matter to you, but I'd want one that is. ;)

Region code hack posted by nexus6, May 11 2006
This hack was successfully applied to the Philips DVP5960/37.
It is the same hack as with the Philips DVP5140

1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
5. Enter 138931
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
9. Press "OK" on the remote

Looks like you're good to go then. )

I'd still hang on to the APEX if it's fixable. You never know how things turn out.

Good luck.

Yep, that looks like the upconverting Philips I was talking about. Should be a good player. Even the 642 would be a good buy since you can get it for $50. Even if a 642 only lasts a year or two, the investment is minimal, and I know you used to be able to hack the firmware for region free, Macrovision, and PAL/NTSC. I think they cracked down on the Macrovision hacking but left the region and PAL hack.

The funny thing is that Macrovision hacking is a moot issue now, since almost no one is going to do a DVD to VHS rip these days. D

Hopefully this will be good to keep for about 4 years. I'll hopefully get a HD tv sometime this year so then the hdmini hook up sounds good. I'm gonna get the extended warrenty this time cuz on my current good jvc player i said i didn't need that stupid warrenty and shorty after i got it, it was skiipping a lot, doesn't really do it now but i would have sent it in to get looked at.
