[quote51bc722104]Students Use High-Pitched Ring Tone Many Adults Can't Hear
POSTED 343 am EDT June 12, 2006
NEW YORK -- Some students are using a new ring tone to get messages in class, and many teachers can't even hear the ring.
The ring tone is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high school students can get text message alerts without the teacher knowing.
The phenomenon is known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds. It happens to many people as they get older.
One New York teacher said a colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders. All of the kids could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything.
The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teens. A security company developed the tone to help stores annoy youths loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected.[/quote51bc722104]
Ok, who has it? D

I heard it and its annoying. Use vibrate...
That's awesome. My mom isn't very old, she's about 42, and she can't hear it. My brother could hear it next door and thought it was the TV.
This is the same exact sound I'd hear when I'd walk into a room with all the computers "off", but I'd tell the teacher one was on because I could hear it on and she would be like "WTF?"

My mom couldn't hear it and she thought it was the weirdest thing. We kind of did the placebo effect on my little brother with it and he heard it too. My mom then turned it up and put her head next to the speaker and it gave my brother a headache and it made my ears hurt. She still couldn't hear it.

If you're on a Mac, highlight the URL in the browser (Safari, at least) and hit option + enter. It will automatically be downloaded.

Does anyone actually have this as their ringtone? I guess it is kinda cool, and it would be annoying as hell to everyone in your class, but vibrate works pretty well for me.

Back in my Christian private school Bible class killed me. Everyone was suppose to be SILENT when reading the Bible and my phone vibrated twice and I had to bring doughnuts to class once. The teacher was old so this would have worked really well.
I hated that... My cell vibrated and the kid next to me yelled doughnets and I muttered shut the hell up but more kids said doughnuts and I had to bring them.
>_<
The last time it vibrated I didn't get caught. P

I put it on vibrate because everyone at my school text messages during class anyway so no one cares if it goes off.

I fucking hate phones. I probably talk on a phone (any; landline, cell) no more than 10 minutes a month. On my cell phone my conversations don't even exceed a full minute.

It just has to do with how good one's hearing is. As we get older our hearing obviously gets worse. But some adults probably still have good hearing and can't hear it.

Amen. I wish that was my usage. A friend of mine wants to talk for 45 minutes (I ain't bullshittin', 45 minutes!) [b600a51fb0c]everytime[/b600a51fb0c] he calls me. Needless to say, I answer that call about once a month. When he and I worked at the same place, he would call everyday and want to talk forever. WTF!
