Oink questions

So mainly, I've downloaded 4-5 albums, and I want to make sure I am uploading to keep my ratio up. I know I can't make a torrent of what I downloaded and upload it, since that would be duplicating. But, after I download the album, if I let it stay in Bittorrent to seed indefinitely, will that go towards my upload? Sorry, I'm a total noob at this.

ugh yea if you leave the torrent open it should seed itself...
heres a tip though, use azureus and google up port fowarding. i can usually download 180kbs on a wireless computer..

Anything anybody uploads from you on the site will count towards your upload. That means that anything downloaded from there will. I often find albums not on Oink that I have found elsewhere and upload them if they are good. Can usually get a 9.XX or 10.XX share ratio from doing so, and it helps a lot since it is hard to get upload up on simply seeding downloaded files because there are so many users seeding with quick connections.

Yeah, unfortunately all of my music is pretty mainstream, common stuff. So should I just start looking for obscure stuff to upload to Oink, for the sake of boosting my ratio?

Srsly me too. My ratio is like .07 -/

they post they ratio req there. you have 2 weeks from the day that you reach like 4 gigs to have a .25 ratio. So just don't rush in and get like 5 gigs of stuff in the first two weeks and it will slowly come.

I'm wondering if the mods, or Admin can just automatically add a list of users who are requesting an invite to any Oink threads. If so...count me in.

Another way to get a good ratio is on tuesday dl one of the new albums that came out (tuesday is release day) in the morning and let it seed all day. i have a 1.7 ratio i think with 20gb uploaded and 13gb dl so i am a power user which is nice plus i get invites every 2 weeks i think. sorry guys im out of them right now.

It sucks if you can't be clever (can't forward ports) because once you upload your own stuff, and another leecher with a better connection finishes and becomes a seeder of what you uploaded, he'll get the ratio from your upload.

I used to have the static IP addresses set up before, when I was using VNC to get to my PCs from work. I'm sure I could figure it out, I'm just feeling lazy ;)

I'll leave it as-is for now, my ratio has been slowly climbing all day.

I just did it yesterday, it only takes about 15 minutes it's not that hard actually.

Lemme know if it makes a big difference in your seeding, I might go ahead and do it.

I'm a complete Torrent nooblet but would like to get into Oink. Does anyone have any links they'd recommend that I read so I know how to get started, what's what and how to use them all?

I use BitComet. Azureus lows down my computer but bitcomet doesnt. Is thier a difference?

utorrent here, definatly reccomend not using azureus. I used it for a while but like YGF says it slows down your computer drastically.

it's quite simple and intunitive actually.

you log into the site, search for a artist, or album

download the torrent you are looking for. Open the torrent with your prefered bittorrent client. Then select where you which to download the torrent to, and which files you wish to download.

I reccomend just saving it to wherever you like to keep your music because when you get done dl'n if you try to move the file you will no longer be sharing it.

then you just leave the torrent program up in the background and it will upload to other people. Once you reach a ratio you are happy with for that torrent you can remove it from the program and stop sharing it.

How much info do I need to give and does it auto-detect the files properties when I upload it or do I need all of that info myself?

justin is correct azereus lags your system down bad but utorrent is a lot smoother and works almost the exact same i just made the switch to it recently

They claim it's a mono transcode but I've got no idea how to tell and the Mod who warned me was pretty vague. shrug

It's easy to download too much on here though, I'm already at about 1.06GB and with my uploads disabled they're only at 176.58MB. (

I'm no power user myself yet, in fact I just hurt my ratio by dl'ing some other stuff....hope I don't get put on watch, but it may happen.

I don't get why they stop your uploading but allow the downloading to continue......surely it would be more productive for the community as a whole to stop your downloads and only allow uploads. shrug

I had my ports forwarded for uTorrent, everything worked fine and today I started downloading a bunch of albums and neither of them finish. So I do port check (feature with uTorrent to check if the selcted port is open) and it says it's not.

I never changed anything in my router or my firewall, there's no Anti-Virus or software firewall running.

I'm stumped. (

I've upped over 5GB and dl'd over 11GB. No matter what, my ratio always seems to be in the 0.400's. That's not too good either. (

FYI once you cross that 5 GB mark you have exactly 14 days to get a .25 ratio

so a wise man might not DL 5 GB before he has at least a .25 ratio

im basically gonna use like 700mb to get popular shit then i'll spend a few weeks just seeding (my comps never off) could a power user post the most current top 10 again? oops

the problem is finding such torrents.......

I just sort them by the number of leechers and then look for the ones where the number of seeds are in red.

Well, it can be totally random. I have around 50 torrents available for seeding, but my two highest are 11.7 and 15.3 ratios. Ones has 110 seeders and the other has 2. So I guess it really just depends and sometimes you get lucky. A good tip is to get new CD's on Tuesday when the retail versions get ripped and then seed them while people download them over the week.

Not sure why but my ports keep being closed. All I have to do i my router to open them again is just Save Settings (without changing anything). It works but it's annoying as shit.

Is there anything more to being "Clever" than having your ports open and able to receive connections? I opened my ports again and I'm not Firewalled but Oink is still telling me on the torrents I'm seeding that I'm not Clever. (

Are you properly forwarding the port in your router? Check in your torrent software, somewhere in the settings it should tell you which port it is using. After you find out, forward that port on your router to the computer you are running the torrent software on. Example layout

Yeah, I'm using uTorrent and it has a feature where it checks online to see if your selected port is open or not. Last night it was open. Today it was open. Tonight it was closed.

So I did what I said and it's now open. shrug

the new muse album finally found it's way on there, get it now and you should have a nice ratio in a week or so

Go back into the uTorrent settings where you see which port it uses. Check to see if the "Randomize port at startup"(?) checkbox is checked. If it is, that is your problem, but I can't think of anything else....

Honestly, I don't think the top 10 is helpful for getting your ratio up. The active ones have so many seeds that it will take forever to get just a ratio of 1. Look for ones you think would be popular, music you like, that only has maybe 2 or 3 seeds.

Mine went to P\ before I pulled that reader out of my Cyberpower. D

I know you're a photographer, so maybe it's wise for you to keep it internal, but I'd recommend to anyone that they [i33fa0c9766]not[/i33fa0c9766] get an internal, but a USB one. IMO, the drivebay is too valuable a space to use for that, plus having it waste drive letters when not being used.

An external USB reader will waste just as many drive letters as an internal, unless you get a single card reader. The internal is still USB, the only difference is it's inside the PC. Personally, I'd rather have an internal as I have too much external USB stuff hanging out of my PC. If/when my Sandisk external goes belly up, I'll be getting an internal one.

Um, yeah, that sort of goes without saying. ;)

The point I was making, is that an internal reader is wasteful unless you deal with flash media on a pretty regular basis. (Like in photography) IMO, if you don't, then having it there is like having a dial-up modem. (A waste of a pci slot to someone with broadband)

Also, while an internal reader is USB, it takes a header that could be used for an internal hub, which is a much more worthy use. (Again, IMO) ;)

so i got invited to oink and all and started to dl some stuff but i need help w/ upping my ratio....

i read the 1st 3 pages of this thread saying sometrhing about getting stuff with not many seeders and many leechers but the problem is i dont think my ports work...ive tried so many times t forward the janks but my smilies on azureus stay yellow though i dl at like 200kb/s i upload really really slow and have like a 0 ratio

lastly i accidently moved some files around so the broke and arent even uploading at all...

A transcode is taking a rip of a CD, and converting it to a different bitrate. Like ripping a CD to a 320k MP3, then converting the 320k mp3 to 192k. You should always re-rip a CD directly for a different bitrate or format.

Each torrent in Azereus can be stopped, and right clicked on to move files. So if you moved a downloaded rip when Azureus was closed, you can point it back at it.

My advice is to stop downloading totally until you fix your problem. You are just digging a bigger hole for yourself otherwise.

A good way to get your ratio up, is to look at new torrents that will be popular, and be one of the first to download and seed it. Tuesday is a really good day to do this.

When you say seeding, do you mean actual transfers, or just that they are in your seeding queue? You can seed 100 torrents, but have a low ratio if no one is actually getting the data from [ia6b3324974]you[/ia6b3324974].

It was happening to me for a while also. Even though I had my ports forwarded, uTorrent was saying the ports were closed.

I had to go into my router, go to the page where you forward your ports, not change anything and just hit save, then continue and then uTorrent would tell me they were open. shrug

I still have to do that.

Exactly. No leechers, despite seeding, means no ratio. People have to want what you have on offer. If someone completes with a far better connection than you, that can steal your thunder too.

I don't know anything about Oink and almost nothing about torrents, but could it be related to DHT? The only torrent tracker I belong to required that I disable DHT in addition to forwarding my ports...

Even though I set up the Port Forwarding for Azureus, I noticed a slight increase in my ratio using my default torrent program (Tomato Torrent).

Sometimes it takes a while for OiNK to show that you're "clever." If it still doesn't say it, try searching the forums, there could be a bug w/ ur program, etc.

ajasax-I think that was it. I looked at my torrents that I uploaded and it doesn't say anything about me not being clever.

I upped 2 albums in FLAC, if anyone with a big ratio that can spare 250-450 mb to help me out, I would love it.

Yes, it needs to.

Like I mentioned earlier, if it isn't uploading, you get no ratio. "Seeding" is the act of putting it out there for people to grab. It doesn't mean people will though. Also, if many people with better connections have the same torrent, they'll get the ratio off it.

I know you said you didn't have anything, but try and get something popular in FLAC that's not there already. Borrow a CD off a friend or something.

In utorrent there is a preference setting for the maximum number of peers to be connected. I think, although I am not certain, the defualt is 5. So if there are 90, utorrent won't connect because that is too many connections. Again, I am not sure if this is correct.

If I download an album from Oink, can I then use that as part of a discography to then upload to Oink?

I'm going to list it as MP3 and put 194KBps or whatever but I'm just a little confused and worried I will get banned for some reason. lol Anyone care to explain and tell me straight up if this is transcode? I read the Transcoding FAQ but ya know... TIA!

I don't know how to tell if an album is transcoded, but if you downloaded it from a reputable place, you are probably fine. If not, i would not chance it.

It is taking an album of lower rate, and re-encoding at a higher rate. Say an album at 128k and re-encoding at 320k. Not a true 320 sample.

I am getting over 225 kb/s right now from Oink. How many seeders does your torrent that you are downloading have?

Technically, transcoding means to convert a media file from one format to another, or to the same format again, but what OiNK is referring to specifically is encoding more than one step beyond the original lossless format. It doesn't matter whether you go up or down in bitrate, it's still a transcode and suffers a loss in quality. So, basically, if it's been converted from pure lossless format like WAV or FLAC [i4d924afca7]more than once[/i4d924afca7] then it's a transcode.

Some examples to illustrate (assume WAV means pure lossless CD rip)

WAV -> 320K MP3 (not considered a transcode)
WAV -> 320K MP3 -> 192K MP3 (transcode)
WAV -> 192K MP3 -> 128K AAC (transcode)
WAV -> 320K MP3 -> FLAC (transcode, even though FLAC is lossless, it was created from a lossy transcode)

Get the idea?

I can hook you up with an invite. Oink has very strict rules about ratio torrent quality, so only take it if you will follow the rules. PM me.

Despite what everyone is saying about jacking up your ratio using obscure CDs I tend to believe the exact opposite. Some of my best torrents are more popular CDs that get huge amounts of daily snatches. There are certain torrents that will get endlessly downloaded just because of what it is (such as Top 100 Masterpieces of Classical Music). If you download the more popular CDs and seed 24 hours a day you will get that ratio up quickly.

If you need an invite PM me and I'll hit you up. Unfortunately, every person from this forum to whom I gave an invite ended up getting their account terminated so if I send you one please keep your ratio at a minimum of 1.0.

As a general rule, don't paste links to specific torrents on that site...or any site for that matter.

I think the discog rule does more harm than good. Few have clients that don't allow specific files to be downloaded from a torrent, and when confronted with a 4GB torrent, people usually will look through it to see if it's quality or not.

Penalizing people for bad invitees isn't surprising though. You really ought to know the person you invite.

Since it seems to be a big deal on Oink, let me say that I'm a serious seeder (my computer is online 24/7) and my ratio on Demonoid is 4+ at all times (and 3+ on Empornium 8) ). You won't have to worry about me not sharing.

Plus, I can get a Demonoid invite if someone needs it.

Either you're user account is not an administrator account, or the file has been set to read-only. This is common with many AV or anti-spyware tools since some trojans hijack your hosts file (although simply setting it read-only will block only the simplest of trojans). Try disabling the read-only flag, making the change, then mark it read-only again (right click the file and choose properties to change the file attributes).

2. Type cd /private/etc and hit enter.

3. Time to edit the hosts file, we will use VIM for it, which is a text editor for the console. You also need root privileges to edit the file because it is read only for normal users.
Type sudo vim hosts and hit enter. You will be asked for your admin password, enter it and hit enter, then VIM pops up.

4. You will see the content of the hosts file, first few lines are comments with # in the front, then 3 entries, do NOT touch these. Navigate to the last line with your cursor keys and then to the right till the cursor is behind the localhost entry

If you want you can add the following lines too, in case you encounter trouble with IRC or the website. Hit enter after each line for a new one

7. Time to leave edit mode now, do so by hitting the escape key.

8. Back in viewing mode, now you need to save the file. You can do this by typing w and hitting enter, VIM will tell you something like "hosts (number of lines) written".

9. Now you need to exit VIM. Type q and hit enter, you will be back at the terminal.

10. Almost done, now you need to tell the OS to use the content of the new hosts file.
Type sudo niload -v -m hosts . < /etc/hosts and hit enter.
You will be asked for the admin password again, after that the hosts file will be parsed.

11. You're done, exit the terminal by typing exit and hit enter. Close the window.

To remove them again - follow the same steps, in step 6 delete the 3 added lines, then save the file, quit the editor. You can then either run step 10 or wait until your next reboot.[/quote94d9460ff4]

2 things...

1. I use Azureus. An other than the fact that it slows my computer down like molasses, I haven't had any problem with it, but are there other programs that work better?

2. I would love an oink invite. My Azureus ratio hangs out between 1.5 and 2 most of the time... )
