Can anyone suggest to me a reasonable radar detector for its price? I want to buy one as part of a present for someone for next month. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything, just one that works well and worth the price. I am hoping I can spend around $100 to $200 for it. I'm not sure if that price is reasonable. If you have personal experiences with them, let me know. I bought one a long time ago but I think it was like $350 or so. I forgot and I gave it to an ex, so I don't even remember what brand it was. Also, where can I find these other than online?

Thanks!

I bought one of those awhile ago, it really didn't work at all, luckily they have a 30 day guarantee so I sent it back.

All of Escort's radar detector's are good. My friend has this one, its great

Honestly if you don't want to pay over 300 its not really worth getting a cheap one. I'd say get them a giftcard or a radar jammer (about $150)

I'm pretty sure that is the one that I had but it was the red text one. It worked really well but I had to sell it. Costs a lot.

The problem is you're asking for "cheap and not fancy" but you get what you pay for. A cheap detector can give you a false sense of security which results in a ticket. That or the false-alarm circuitry is cheesy and results in so many false hits that you soon start ignoring it... resulting in a ticket. )

Spending less than $300 is probably a waste. There's also not a detector made that can protect you from a laser pulse when traffic isn't heavy and the cop aims it right at you. Sure, the detector goes off, but you're already caught.

I was young once and wouldn't have listened to this advice either, but I'll say it anyway don't speed, at least not by more than 10mph. Keep it under 10mph over and you'll almost never get stopped (unless it's a school zone).

actually it wouldnt. telling them not to speed so as to decrease their risk of death and their risk of killing another seems like a good present to me. roll

I don't usuallly speed. In fact, I got a ticket only once in my life (and I've been driving for over 10 yrs now) ... that was when I was going 45 in a 35 zone... I thought it was 45 mph zone b/c I just made a turn from a 45 mph street. My fault. Anyways, it's not on my record since it's my first ticket and didn't affect my insurance rate either.

With that being said, the radar isn't for me. It's a bday present for someone. I definitely don't want to encourage him to speed. It's just for insurance when he's going on long trips or so, and it will happen that he'll be over the speed limit at one point or another. I think it's really rare to find someone who can honestly tell you that they've never sped in their life. I'll make sure to give him a long talk about the dangers of speeding when I give him this present, ok?

Anyways, ilanbg is right. "Don't speed" would be a crappy present.

I can't afford $300 radars... so I can't do the Valentine. I was hoping they had pretty decent radars for $200 or less. I did some research but there's conflicting information.
