hey guys, for my 4th gen 40gb mono ipod, it recently stopped working. Everytime i try to turn it on, i can hear the device motor or whateve rinside of it turning on (kind of like a computer booting up), then it turns off, and on again and etc. etc. So is this because of my battery being dead? there is a sad face icon on it, and i can't reformat. Is my ipod just fucked up or do i need a new battery?

Holy crap that sig is distracting, it took me like 2 minutes to read your post. Anyway, since you can't reformat it here is the info apple gives on the situation. http//docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771[]http//docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771

that happened to me on a 5th gen...let it get a good charge and try again...you MIGHT need to drain the battery completely though, and I don't know how you would do this.

I got the same problem with my 4th gen ipod and repeated the same steps as you done. Do the same, maybe it'll work.

Right as your iPod tries to start up hold down Back and Select and it will bring you into a dianostics mode were you can test every bit of the iPod!

Also connect it to your computer and when the iPod is starting up hold down Select and Play....this will force it into Disk Mode. If this works go into the Apple Firmware updates Software and restore your iPod.

Hope this helps!

My iPod had this. I managed to fix it somehow, but then the thing died a few days later.

No matter what you do, chances are it's fucked sooner or later. Back up the music while you still can.
