Yes, you can but it is only with the earbuds. The type of speaker is different from the bigger ones that cover your ears...well most.

now get a microphone and plug it in to the headphone port and you can hear from it!

The mechanisms are all the same, (almost, with different materials). We used to use a copper bull horn (speaker only) as a microphone, before any of us had cd burners and no one had a dual cassette deck. We'd take a cd, play it on the stereo, next to the bullhorn recording onto a 1 tape deck. Sounded grrrrrrrrrr...crappy.

that's crazy. why is that? i mean, are speakers just the same componets of microphones, but just reversed or something?

They both use a vibrating surface and an electromagnet. Microphones take the vibrations caused by sound waves and convert them to current. Speakers take the current to cause the surface to vibrate, using sound waves.
They're basically the same thing, just each is optimised for it's use.

no it doesn't work as good as a real microphone, but if yo don't have one, it will [ia4b688181c]probably[/ia4b688181c] suffice, if quality isn't a huge issue for you...

I only knew this because I accidentally stumbled upon it when I was younger. I'm not surprised most people didn't know this, though. Unless you know about how they work, you would think that one device was purely for receiving sound, and the other for sending sound.

You guys know that you can use Linux on your iPod to record notes through your headphones or a microphone (using the regular headphone jack), without buying that $30-40 thing.
Google it, it's awesome, can't do it with the 5G ipods though, 3 and 4, i believe so
