probably, but that's why you put it on a separate HDD. nusgax, as to the fact that betas have been out for over a year....this is beta 2. much different from the alphas and beta 1, and from what I've seen, it's a pretty cool OS, (i've installed previous betas as well) I'm really curious to find out how it will work with a 360 and the media extender capabilities.

Joshbox, it's a public beta, just go here, and sign up for it, and you'll get your own key!

There servers are getting taxed. Maybe MS should think about using torrents or would that be to easy?

iamzim

08-06-2006 12:48:13

i said new HD, because their initial beta (not public) had some problems with wanting to be the ONLY os on the disk, and would apparently just go and format the entire drive. As I havent installed this one yet, i'm not sure of how it would act, but i wouldn't want to risk anything. Maybe i'll test it out by making a backup image of my drive and installing on a new partition.

OSX is sluggish and retarded. Apples are overpriced and if Apples were so cool how come MS has like a 90% share of the market?

[quote3c7c39beca="Wolfeman"]OSX is sluggish and retarded. Apples are overpriced and if Apples were so cool how come MS has like a 90% share of the market?[/quote3c7c39beca]

"Apple's market share is bigger than BMW's or Mercedes's or Porsche's in the automotive market. What's wrong with being BMW or Mercedes?"
Steve Jobs

The only reason Apple is sluggish is because you're using a Mac Emulator on your PC or XBOX. THAT, my friend, would make it slow, go into an Apple Store, test drive it, you DO like Porsches don't you???

Apple computers start at $600, cheaper for students, and cheaper refurbished. They come with great beginner software for making Music, Videos, DVDs, no PC does that for that price. Don't tell me they're expensive. You can if you want, but I would consider that to be jumping the gun, or getting defensive without doing the research.

Should also mention that about half of the Apple Store's customers are people switching to Macs.

Wolfeman

08-06-2006 14:22:09

There are hundreds of car makers so that statement means nothing. There is really only 2 computers, Apple and Microsoft. I agree Microsoft isn't perfect but I just don't think OSX is that much better.

I've sat in an Apple store and played with a MBP for an hour and I just hate the way the mouse feels (can we give up this retarded one-button mouse already), the OS feels sluggish, just nothing about it makes me freak out the way Apple fanboys think we should.

All that video editing, music, blah blah, is so useless. Most people don't use it. They use computers for internet and email. You can get a cheaper PC for doing just that. Also, Macs suck for gamming...

BVGuitarPlayer

08-06-2006 14:40:36

What are you talking about?? One button mouse? The only wired Apple mouse that they sell is the Mighty Mouse which has a scroll, and 3 buttons. Macs are ridiculously fast, they really are.....games? Who the heck cares about games, go get a 360 from FreePay (if they ever send them out) haha.

Apple came up with everything and to this day comes up with everything first......watch Pirates of Silicon Valley. Bill Gates just had a better marketing strategy in the 80's. Apple marketed to education and Gates marketed to business. Students used them at school, and didn't want to be reminded of their school work at home, so they didn't like Apple. PCs were marketed to businesses, and businessmen thought, "I can do some of my work at home instead." Kids don't have money to buy computers, so the Business Dad picks, brings home the PC which he can do his work with.

Sadly, Windows is a pure rip off of Apple, this article (coming up) doesn't show that, but think about it, in recent years, who had the first worthwhile portable music player, haha everyone on this website knows.

"The lawsuit ended when Gates finally agreed that Microsoft would not use Macintosh technology in Windows 1.0, but the use of that technology in future versions of Windows was left open. With that agreement, Apple lost its exclusive rights to certain key design elements." --http//inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa043099.htm[]http//inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa043099.htm Let's compare new OS X features with new Vista features http//www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/[]http//www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/ Let's see what Windows has to offer, besides the widgets and dashboard that they are copying from apple.....

BVGuitarPlayer

08-06-2006 14:46:58

MacBook Pro does, your right. I was talking about the mouse as you brought it up, not the trackpad. OS X is probably underrated, I'll look for some benchmarks comparing an Intel Mac with a "Wintel" machine or whatever you want to call them, and find the prices of the configuration. PC will probably be cheaper, but the Mac will win all the benchmarks, I bet.

Wolfeman

Ryizan

08-06-2006 15:20:47

Actually....any new revision of the MacBook Pro will have a 2 button mouse! They have a 2 button mouse on the MacBook. You use 2 fingers on the trackpad while clicking and it does the right-click action! (the 17" MBP also has the 2 "button" trackpad)

The heat issues are from toooo much thermal paste!(I have the MB Service manual!) Apple has caught the issue and the regular MacBook doesn't have as much paste...that's why it's not as hot. In the MacBOok Pro service manual they say to use the WHOLE syringe per Chip!!!!! In the Mac Book manual they say to use 1/3 of the syringe per chip. It's still too much, but it won't cause processor to produce soo much heat that it melts your tool off! I can see RevB/C MacBookPro's running as cool as a cucumber.(well warm so to say)

I'm not an Apple fan, but OSX will probably make me buy one anyway (or get a freebie). I'm a long time Unix/Linux user -- going on around 11 years now -- and OSX being linix based is the only thing that has saved Macs. If Apple would officially release OSX for PC's (I know about the hacks, I'm talking a legit release) I'd probably buy it.

That said, Windows rules for the very reason it HAS the market share. You don't gain market share necessarily by being the best, in fact you rarely do. OS/2 (particulary after 3.0 "Warp") was much superior to Win95 yet MS won that war due to it's muscle and market share. IBM was a bigger, richer company, but it can't market for squat. Betamax is another example of superior technology that lost the market battle for numerous reasons. HD-DVD will probably be another, Blu-Ray is technically superior but is late to market and too expensive. The list goes on and on -- it isn't technical superiority that lands you at #1.

Windows is my bread and butter since that's what I get paid now to develop and support, mostly. Still some linix and embedded systems, but mostly Windows.

Windows is also the only way to play games. I'm sorry, but PC gaming slaps down console gaming (with the exception of perhaps sports games) in just about every way, and Mac can't touch Windows for gaming. Mind you I enjoy console gaming, but consoles can't touch the richness and flexibility that you get from a high-end gaming rig, that can be kept updated with the times. Consoles run on like 6 year cycles, so by the time Xbox360 reaches half of its life span, PC's will be leaving it in the dust. My gaming rig already spanks any Xbox in terms of performance and quality (although for a lot more money) and the 360 isn't a year old yet.

Yeah, I suppose that there's no reason that companies have been choosen to go with Dell continuously for the past decade. I've had no problem with Dells at all. In fact, my parents still use the Dell they bought for me nearly 10 years ago to access the internet and send e-mail.

I'm not slamming Macs by any means, I'm just stating my personal preference. Sorry you aren't as open-minded.

dmorris68

08-06-2006 18:19:07

And I'll also add that, while I build all of my household systems (mine, the wife's, and kids), I refer anybody who asks for system advice to Dell. My company switched to Dell about 8-10 years ago after using Compaq, IBM, Micron, and HP. We recently let HP back in the door because they severely underbid Dell, but then booted them back out. Dell has served us well, I've had several Dells at work, and everybody I've recommended to buy Dell has been very happy with theirs. So Dell always gets my vote if you must buy a pre-fab system.

08-06-2006 19:14:45

Our first computer was a top-o-de line Dell Di(e?)mension 8100. Like $2000. I HATE IT! We had the HD, the CD-RW, CD-rom and now it seems soomthing is wrong with the video card! THe CD-RW/CD-ROM were probably not hardware issues as we listillli can't copy CD's! I just recently got an error in the BIOS that says the HD is running out of the specified ranges and that I should back up all Data and replace the drive! WTF! That Dell KILLED me and I was born agian as a mac user. I will explain......

A few years ago my grandpa picked up a Mac Classic from 1990 of the curb. It had it's little B&W 9" screen in a potable case. It had a small printer and OS 6 on the 40MB HD. I loved this computer..yes it was old but it was just a neat design. I started looking up Apple computers.(Around 8-9 years old) Ever since then I've been Apple all the way. I had never experianced a crash on my ole' Mac Classic. Now I own an iMac G3 400Mhz. Yes OS X is a little sluggish but it is OS X 10.3.9! 400Mhz! 320MB RAM! But the only Sluggish thing I see is the Dock getting maginified and when I run Safari with 10+ Tabs open, with iTunes running, and iChat, plus Mail, and iSquint coverting .Movurl==http://=http:///url files into .mp4url==http://=http:///url files, and Xcode.

08-06-2006 19:36:44

I agree. I really like my iMac. I grew up using PCs. I use a PC at school and work. However, when I decided to upgrade my computer this year, I got a G4 iMac at my brother's recommendation. I have no trouble with speed. I have run a number of programs simultaneously without any loss of speed, including a few that I usually have to run alone on my PC. The OS works fine for me. I like the programs already loaded on the iMac, as well. Everyone in the house has fun with the Photobooth program. In fact, even though they all have their own PCs, they're usually hogging my iMac. I am a new Apple owner, but I have really been pleased with it and I would buy one again.

Everything except the webcam and a cheap 'Made In China' XBOX to PC adapter doesn't work in x64.. everything else works perfectly.

How many people are installing this on a new drive, as opposed to a seperate partition?

That's a pretty sweet deal. I actually just moved the shit on my other drive to my regular drive and installed it.

I like it, it's pretty sweet but I haven't spent a whole lot of time on.

One thing though; Why the fuck do about 3 security pop-ups appear whenever you try to open something and what's with the "claiming ownership" shite?

You can only install the x64 version of Vista if you have a 64-bit processor. Vista x64 currently does not backward support most x86 (32-bit) drivers.

Earlier on slickdeals someone posted a link to microsoft to get a free copy of Vista. This had to have been a few weeks ago and had microsoft.com/india in the URL and still haven't received it. They had a slot for US (

I signed up for that thing, still have yet to receive it. But it's not a "free copy". It's probably just a test and a beta version. The full version's not even out yet.

I installed RC1 last night. Seems to be better than Beta 2. It says upgrade disabled when you install it so I doubt you can upgrade from XP. That would be a bad idea anyways.

I dont really notice a lot of a difference. Sidebar loads by default, and now when you maximize a window it overlaps everything rather than just leaving the sidebar open all the time. New cursors that are very mac-like. Havent really had time to play much. I have to see if there are XFI drivers for vista.

Can I use my Beta CD-key to install RC1?

JOSHBOX

10-09-2006 14:28:50

Guys, please dont upgrade your XP installation to vista

a) vista may not work, or work well on your computer in which case your fucked and have to reinstall

b) you might hate vista and cant go back

Alternatively, repartition a small 15-20gb part of your drive for vista, install vista there and get your fix. That is all.

Yes, you are supposed to use that key.

I installed the beta XFI drivers and sound seems to work fine. Although after installing nvidia drivers I get lots some Vista "driver not responding" errors.

Anyway to sign up now?

I actually signed up twice by accident and got 2 keys. If a couple if you want it PM me. Each one is good for up to 10 machines anyways.
