cheap + camcorder dont normally go together well. I HIGHLY recommend something with 3CCDs. you get WAY better color quality from them. However, those cams will run you upwards of $600 or so. Normally you can find a good cannon for around $300

here's my camcorder, which I highly recommend

but definately go with the mini DV instead of any hi-8 or digital-8.

get one of the JVC Everio Hard disk camcorders. They're pretty good.

Do you have any problems with motor noise while recording?

not with my cam, the pv-gs250

thing's very quiet, no motor noise gets picked up by the mic, if that's what you're asking. there is very little, if any noise made while recording. it even has noise cancellation for windy conditions, and a "zoom mic" that when in use, centers in on whatever you're zoomed out to!

if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me, and i'll try to help out the best I can!

wow, iamzim, i really love that camera. i really wish i had enough money to buy it. i will most likely have to settle for the cheap one for now (so is that zr-700 worth the money?) and then save up for the pv-gs250 after my trip...

here's what I recommend, if you can. Bestbuy has the gs300, it's got a bit more features, newer model, etc. A camcorder is a big investment, and hopefully something you'll keep and use for at least 5 - 6 years, possibly more! i chose the 3ccds because my honeymoon was in hawaii, and i wanted to capture the colors of the scenery (which is freaking amazing!!). My suggestion if you could do it, would be to save up as much as you can to purchase the camera/camcorder that you really want. it would suck to spend $300 right now, only to go back, and spend $800 in 2 years! There are always options for credit cards (though your age says 17) at stores, such as bestbuy for no interest for a certain amount of time. and with it being so close to fathers day, there are sure to be other deals and incentives soon (i KNOW bby has a ton of "dads and grads" deals).

if none of that made sense, my main point is to not just settle for something as large as this. Get what you want first, because it will save you money in the long run! Read these reviews (and look at the website for more, it's very useful!)

read the reviews, and find what's best for your particular situation!

as i said, what's best for your situation! ) you can't go wrong with a canon! they're great cameras with great image processors in them!

but by all means, avoid anything but DV like the plague!! DO NOT GET hi-8 or digital-8!!

I have a Sony DCR-HC40 HandyCam. I love it, the picture is amazingly sharp. And it's not a 3CCD. I capture video via Firewire and make DVD's of special events, complete with menus and chapters and titles, and get lots of compliments.

The current version is I believe the HC42, and can be had for under $400 online. I paid around $600 at CircuitCity not quite 2 years ago.

Yeah NightShot and Super NightShot are pretty sweet, but honestly I don't use them much. I wish I had it though several years ago when kids would vandalize my yard. I setup my old camcorder on time-lapse peeking through the window, but it was too dark to catch them. I wound up installing motion sensing flood lights which put a stop to it. )
