If you use WinAMP, or a DirectX-plugin-capable sound editor, you can try AnalogX Vocal Remover.

http//www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/vremover.htm

BTW AnalogX has a lot of nifty, free utilities like that.

It's a plugin, for either WinAMP or a DirectX-plugin-capable sound editor. As I mentioned in the thread above.

If you don't have WinAMP, it's a free download. It happens to be my music player of choice. Then install the Vocal Remover plugin. The rest should hopefully be self explanatory -- I've never actually used that plugin myself.

Depending on the version of WinAmp and your skin, you're looking for a button towards the bottom of the Playlist window labeled "opts." If you click that and choose "Sort List" you have three choices on how to sort the list..

Nope, I just tried to install it in WinAmp 5.1x and wasn't able to configure it to work correctly. I used the download from AnalogX and the download from the WinAmp site.

I use a program called "ACID PRO" (the normal ACID is fine as well), not a cheap program but its very useful. (Or... you can find Acid on torrent sites)
-Add the plugin using the menu and you'll have to reset acid.
-Drag your audio files (from audio cd or from harddrive) to the workspace.
-Once there, you'll see a waveform of the audio file.
-Drag it out so you get the whole waveform of the audio file
-Right click and select plugin, then select analog x
-Once turned on, you can test the audio file out.
-Click on FILE, then Render As... , then select your audio format output.

[quote6150bf1924="YourGiftsFree"]How do I add the plugin using the menu?[/quote6150bf1924]

There is a folder called "shared plugins" under the Sony folder. You can put the plugin manually in there as well if you can't see the place to add the plugin from the menu.

YourGiftsFree

07-06-2006 14:32:43

okay.
install Winamp first...

then install the plugin.

open winamp and press cntrl-p .

go to the section that says plugins (the main part) and make sure the plugin directories are the same as the one you installed AnalogX into.

then scroll down the plug in catagories on the right side looking each time to see which one the analogX one is in.

then click on it and press the done button.

now you will have a little scroll bar.

play a song and then just fiddle around with the scroll bar.
each end gives you a different effect.... that's it!

I just installed it under WinAmp, and it shows up in the plugins preferences under DSP/Effects. When you click on it to activate it, it displays a slider going from 0% to 100%, with 0% being no processing and 100% being max processing.

I also just tried it out on Santana's "Smooth" track, ripped to VBR320 MP3 from the original CD. When I move the slider to 100% it removes almost all vocals, I only heard some faint vocals during the loudest vocal parts. However it also compresses the music a bit, so quality may vary depending on the track. The README says the DirectX plugin results in better quality than the WinAMP plugin, so if quality is that important you might want to get ACID or something and use the DX plugin.

There was another freebie tool used to remove vocals that I remember reading about, but I'm drawing a blank on it. I'm too busy to Google around at the moment, but I'll post if it comes back to me.

Also, Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor. It's a bit of an advanced technique, but you can use it to manual strip vocals.

[quote922fc9748b]Can I remove the vocals from a recording to make a Karaoke track?

This is possible only for certain stereo tracks. When the vocals are exactly the same on both stereo channels, you can remove them by “subtracting” one channel from the other. This works for many studio recordings, where the vocal track is mixed exactly in the center.

To do this in Audacity

1. Import your stereo file into Audacity.
2. Open the track menu (click the arrow next to the track title), and choose “Split Stereo Track.”
3. Select the lower track (the right channel) by clicking it in the area around the mute/solo buttons.
4. Choose “Invert” from the Effects menu.
5. Using the track menus, change each track to “Mono.”

Press the Play button to hear the results. If you are lucky, the voice will be gone but most of the other instruments will be unaffected, just like a karaoke track. You can use the Export commands in the File menu to save the results.[/quote922fc9748b]

Download Audicaty at http//audacity.sourceforge.net

Also, MP3Doctor is $22 and claims to do this and more. The download is free but don't know how crippled it might be.

that analogx program is REALLY cool... doesnt completely eliminate vocals, but is still very cool

seems as though it eliminates main vocals, but backup singsrs will still be included. Also, for some songs that are recorded a certian setting (with instruments in the same room as the singer), the vocals seem to be picked up by microphones for the various instruments, making the vocals seem as though they are in the backround. An some songs just sound horrible.

I don't use ACID, so unfortunately, no I can't.

I posted a step-by-step to do pretty much the same thing in Audacity, which is free. From the description it will be about the same quality (and carry the same restrictions) as the AnalogX plugin.

Did you run the installer, then point it to the plugins folder under the WinAmp install folder? If so, then that's right. You should be able to go into the Preferences dialog (Ctrl-P), select Plug-ins, then DSP/Effects. You should see it in the list. Just click on it to activate it.

No AnalogX folder. Just the dsp_vr.dll (and .txturl==http://=http:///url) file. Check to be sure those are in the root plugins folder..

I don't think you downloaded the WinAMP plugin. Sounds like you downloaded the DirectX one.

Go back to the AnalogX site and get the WinAMP version.
