I am moving to a new place. I had cable at this house and now we switched to DSL. Does it work the same as cable? Or do you just plug your phone line straight into whatever computer you want to use? Also one of the rooms has two phone lines in it and there are a bunch of splitters everywhere. Do you need a modem? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I can help, I'm a nerd and have DSL as well. Just plug in your DSL modem to a phone line. To prevent interference you will need "DSL filters" for all of your other phone lines that use your phone number. You will need to set up the modem, I have an ActionTec WRT54G which I believe is rather common (has wireless G built-in). In most cases you plug it in, type in you your browser 192.168.0.1, that is where you will enter your user name and password so that your modem registers you and you get DSL.

Let me know if you have any other questions (will work for karma) ;-)

Most services come with self-installation CD's and all of the wires you need. I had mine going in probably less than 10 mins. Short and straight to the point.

Ok. I know it came with a bunch of DSL filters. So the DSL modem is just like a cable modem right? Except for the cable coming in? Or not. Will my wireless linksys router (which is also wired) work with this? I have one PC and my xbox 360 wired.. then one PC and two laptops are wireless. Will this work?

And thanks BV +KMA

EDIT
Tell me if this is right. One room have a phone line with a DSL filter plugged into the wall and then to the modem. Then the modem plugs into the computer. Then another room just plug a computer right into a phone line using the filter and you have internet? Or does it have to be the main one? Thanks.

haha sorry for the newb question.. just trying to figure out what i'm getting in to. I'm sure I can figure it out easy..just wondering if you guys knew.

Your setup should be something like this
............................................|---> DSL Filter (For Each Telephone)---> Telephone
Telephone line Coming in ---|
............................................|---> DSL Modem ---> Router (If your modem only has 1 port for a computer) --> Ethernet Cable (Not the Telephone Cable) from Router/Modem for Each Computer ---> Computer

I think that is pretty accurate. Correct me if I'm wrong. D

Oh ok..but what would explain the room with two phone plugs? Kind of like an outlet with two plugs but with two phonelines?

That probably means you are able to add a second phone line to your house. You probably don't need to worry about that. Just plug the modem into the top jack. Have any other questions? H3x I guess is the resident phone nerd, and both my parents work for Qwest, so I could always ask them shrug Would you happen to have them as your ISP? wink

This is how a standard DSL hookup would look like.. (If you have a router, You plug the Ethernet cable into the Router instead of directly to the computer.. But everything else in this diagram remains the same.)

If you have any other questions, or need a little clarification.. Let me know.

u should be able to feed wired and wireless connections thru ur current wireless router. u may have to put the one u get from dsl in bridge mode.
