So ive had a nice Panasonic 36sx31 36" Tv for 4 years and have always used the S-Video. Today i moved it and saw it has componant!! WTF? I though only HD had them. Is there an advantage to using composite over s-video on a SD tv??? I mean what benefits will i see using it and should i hook-up my xbox 360 through it

Yes, you'll get a better image with Component (not composite!), even in SD. The difference won't be as striking on a non-progressive (i.e. interlaced) display as it would be on a progressive HD set, but it will be better.

Yes, CRT TV's can have component inputs, even some of the cheaper 27" models have them now. I have component on my 27" Sony Wega in the bedroom (soon to be replaced by my newly arrived CSC 42" Panny Plasma), and have my HD Moxi box hooked up to it.

Yea. What do i set my xbox 360 to??

Does the componant mean my set is 480P???

If you boot your 360, does it show normal tv mode under display?

I then click hd settings and it says 480p is currently selected

Don't have a 360, so I can't help you there.

Your TV is most likely not 480p, but 480i. Still better than S-Video, which is 400i. Your TV manual should tell you what it's capable of.

Your tv has 480i upconverting inputs. Itt'l definatly look better then standard TV but its not true hd.

Whats up converting inputs and why does it say starndard tv on my 360 even though the the switch on the av cable is set to tv. However i go into the hd settings and it says 480p.

Explain this. Sorry if im not clear

Even though the TV is not high defination, it can "upconvert" the signal into a clearer picture. I'm not sure why it says 480p... try it, if it looks better then great, if not, try setting it to 480i (which is what the TV is rated to)

how do i set to 480i?

Reason i ask is when i move in ghost recon everything sort of gets jaggy like its filling in the detail and when i stop it focuses

You will have to still set the connecting cable to TV, not HDTV. In the dashboard of the 360, it will have to be set to standard 480i, not a 480p or other HD signal.

The differance in componet cables is it splits the signal into the 3 primary colors. It is still just 480i, but a clearer picture. S-Video splits the signal into 2 arrays.

In his CRT case, correct. But just to clarify for those who may have not understood your comment component can carry any standard SD/HD TV resolution, up to and including 720p and 1080i.

But like we said, with a standard SD CRT television, component is just going to be a slight improvement over Svideo, it's not going to gain you a lot of resolution or a progressive display.

Correct. I use my component for my 360 connecting to my HDTV.
