WTF? I've never heard of that happening.

Seriously, wtf.

It's not that uncommon. The CD most likely had a crack in it. Due to the insanely high RPM's that CD's are spun in a modern PC drive (as opposed to the relatively slow 150RPM of a 1x audio player), the slightest compromise in integrity of the disc can cause it to shatter.

But $130 for a burner? Was this an external Plextor or something? That's insane. The best burner for the money is the NEC 3x50 series, and they can be had for around $40 or less shipped. Plextors are pricey, but you can still find internals for less than $100.

i blame history

mythbusters had this one. a loooong time ago. it was pretty fun.

Have you tried to disassemble the drive to remove the shards?

There may be catastrohpic damage, but there may not be. I'd at least try to salvage it.

On a side note, I think a BenQ for around $30 (seen it) is a decent alternative to an NEC.

hehehhehe

I was a die hard NEC supporter too until I got a BenQ burner. You can get them cheaper than NEC drives when you find the right deal. My BenQ DW1655 writes better (better PI/PO scans) and faster (about a minute faster when burning on 8X) than my NEC ND3540 and it was cheaper. I was amazed.

Even more important is that bulk OEM BenQ drives, which are equal to their retail models, are usually rebranded and distributed by I/O Magic, Micro Advantage and many others. Those are the brands usually on sale that people tend to pass over. roll

I bought a MicroAdvantage BenQ 8x DVD burner. It was extremely unreliable, burned a heckuva lot of coasters, and is now dead. It just quit spinning up one day. I still have it here under my desk, for some reason.

I've owned several NEC's and all have performed great, plus the hacked firmware for them is awesome.

I only buy OEM/bulk drives, BTW. Except for that MicroAdvantage/BenQ, which was a pricing mistake that was too sweet to pass up. )

Well, an 8x is an [ifaea650bfe]8x[/ifaea650bfe]... ;)

I got my I/O Magic branded BenQ 1620 (16x) about 2 years ago, and it works beautifully. I've not had [bfaea650bfe]ONE[/bfaea650bfe] coaster on it. Paid $30 for it..

BTC, on the other hand....ugh. Micro Advantage rebranded some of those too.

Ya know, now that you mention it... it might have been a BTC drive. It's been a few years ago so now you've got me second guessing it.

All I know is that it sucked! Badly! As opposed to good sucking! lol

she didnt really take good care of the cd so i wouldnt be suprised if thats the case. maybe part of the reason the dvd burner was expensive was because I bought the burner 2 years ago shrug

I had to remove the burner from my tower's case and shake it till all the shards of the cd fell out. After i put it back in the drive would keep opening and closing repeatedly.... i decided to just put a cd in there to see what would happen. It reads the cd fine and stayed closed. I tested a bunch of cds and dvds and everything seems to be working fine D

Not so infallible after all... ;)

Yeah, that was why I mentioned the BTC. Micro Advantage used to use the same/similar box for the BTC and BenQ. There could be no bigger an abyss between quality of brands, than that. shock

TSJ has put me off taffy for some reason...

i had tha thappen to me, the cd was stuck and wouldn't open, so what I did was I just put a paper clip into that little hole, and the cd went crazy and shards were flying.

I was so scared that i broke it, but it worked find on the next cd after I shut the computer down (which is what I should have done before opening the cd tray)

Yeah, if you suspect it shattered, it's best to disassemble it. In opening it, you can damage the tray mechanism, and expose the more sensitive components to the shards.
