Itchy sunburn and hives

Ok, I can't take it anymore!!! The itchy sunburn is driving me nuts and I, for some reason, also have hives.

Does anyone know of a proven method to stop the ITCHING??

And before anyone says, "Stupid, you should have worn sunscreen." I did. I applied spf 30 twice but I guess I didn't get my neck and shoulders as well as I should have (partially the fiance's fault as the back of my arms are the worst).

And an oatmeal bath didn't work. Neither did applying benadryl anti-itch cream or an antiitch powder.

Anyone????

Some aloe vera should do the trick nicely.

Itt'l feel really, really good.

I'd just lay in the tub for a couple hours.

I've been using that green aloe lanocaine stuff and it sooths the burn, but not the itching.

You also jogged my memory about my worst sunburn ever...

I was about 8 years old when I went on a day trip to some lake upstate, and when they passed around the sunscreen, they forgot about me. (bastards) I fell asleep, and woke up with a red back and shoulders. Not bad I thought, but the next morning I had about 40 yellow blisters all over my shoulders.

Like this

(Edit Actually, that's about 1/3 the size of the ones I had. This guy was lucky)

Yup, I had second degree burns.

As much as I tried to play the tough guy, as each one popped, I screamed like hell. It was like being stabbed. Plus you have that viscous yellow fluid pouring out of you....yum.

Now every few years I visit the dermotologist to take a look see that everything "looks" okay. (

So, carry that sunblock, people. Even in the winter.

That goes double for my fellow celtic blooded palefaces....

Is that readily available in stores like Walgreens or Walmart?

And I've got small blisters, so I think it might be a tad bit on the 2nd degree side. (

Yeah, they have SARNA at Walgreens (other chains too). It comes in a white pump bottle with blue print.

Blisters usually go along with a second degree burn. If they are as bad as mine were, you have to see a demotologist. They can become infected without treatment.

I just picked some up. They're really tiny and it could be from the hives. ( This stuff better be worth the $11.someodd dollars they charged me for it. I got some Calamine lotion if all else fails.

This is thoroughly annoying as I really thought I put enough sunscreen on. My forearms are just tan, not burnt. (

Calamine never worked for me. The only relief I got was from SARNA. Hopefully it will work for you.

some options
topical benadryl
topical hydrocortisone
benadryl or atarax pills (get the generics of these)

as for ur rxn, is this the first time u have gotten hives and are u sure they are hives?
if these are hives (raised bumps surrounded by redness, often itchy) then u liked have this

ps
2nd generation antihistamines will work too - zyrtec claritin clarinex alavert. some better than others and most are once daily

I've had all of these at one time or another (The Atarax, for Pityriasis Rosea), and I specifically wouldn't recommend the hydrocortisone if she has sunburn-related blisters unless a Doctor told her so. Cortisones reduce inflammation, but also slow down the healing process.

yes and no. hydrocortisone used once daily in the over the counter strength will not retard healing on the skin (at least noticably).

if she isnt sure what she has she should see a doctor for sure.
she should see someone anyway if she thinks she has urticaria from sun exposure...

I know it's hives because I've compared what I have to pictures. Also, taking benadryl has stunted the spreading.

Where I have the hives is NOT where I had sun exposure. Right now the hives aren't itchy, but the sunburn is. The worst hives are on my inner thighs, as if I was wearing something that caused an allergic reaction (I was wearing a new pair of cotton pants from Old Navy and I'm like my dad and have sensitivity to some soaps).

If things don't get better, I promise I'll call the Dr., Mom. ;)

jy3

a few things...
solar urticaria does exist but like u suggested it could be something else. anxiety, foods, etc can all cause hives. it can be quite annoying, as you now know. what I would do is if the hives persist 7 days call your doctor to be seen.
do u have asthma or any other allergic type diseases?
anyway, hope ya feel better

The only thing I know I'm allergic to is nickel and that's found in cheap jewelry. I've been doing some research into this and I think I might have found the culprit Wellbutrin. I've found several cases of people taking it for 2-3 weeks and then break out into hives and itching all over. I think I'll call my Doctor tomorrow and talk to her about it and see what she says. So far the hives aren't spreading, and they're not THAT itchy, but if it's my meds, I'm gonna be sad (and no, that's not a pun).

Thanks so much guys!! And Tholek, the sarna really takes the sting out but for some reason isn't getting rid of the itch as much as I'd like. I stayed home from work today because fabric on my arms and neck is just painful.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice and help. Next time, SPF 50, slathered on THICK.

I used to use that and Solarcaine for lesser burns, but when you go SARNA, you just can't go back. )

Update...saw a Doc today in Urgent care (my doc is out til next week and the others' schedules were booked). He figures that it's caused by the pants I bought because I don't have hives on my torso, just legs and arms. So, I have a Rx for zyrtec and predisone, and he was kind enough to give me a cream for my sunburn. ;)

I'm sure my Doc will call next week to follow up and I really hope the hives GO AWAY.

Oh, and Aguy, don't be so crass.

I was already taking benadryl and using a topical for the hives. ;)

Btw, I emailed Old Navy's customer service, explained what happened, and asked for information on what dyes or other products they would have used on the pants.

I really loved how they fit....I just hope I can wash them and not break out again. ( Won't try until this clears up.
