''According to a recent Drowned In Sound report, a US radio presenter has accused the Red Hot Chili Peppers of plagiarism, claiming that the band's "Dani California" single is near identical to Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

I believe you guys all heard the new RHCP single, Dani california, apparently they stole it from Tom Petty...

You can hear a mix of the 2 songs here... what do you guys think ?

i laughed so hard when i heard the comparison. complete ripoff.
never been a huge rhcp fan, but some of their older stuff is alright/very good. but yeah, this is pretty funny.

I don't know...it's hard to tell if they intentionally ripped him off. I mean, a 4 chord riff is sure to be repeated in music...and that rhythm isn't exactly original. I think it's just coincidential. Who knows though. I mean, with the musical minds of flea and john frusciante, i dont think they would have to rip anyone off.

I don't see how that could be plagiarism. The beat is generic, probably used in lots of other songs. And this song is exclusively RHCP's style, w/ long verses, for i.e.

It's pretty fucking blatant as far as I'm concerned.

yes the rif is very similiar but i dont see any similarities in the words of the song or how the words are sang

I dunno, the opening lyrics, combined with the riff, are pretty reminiscent of Last Dance with Mary Jane...

I agree that they didn't rip it off wholesale, but RHCP were probably inspired by the song, if unconsciously.

Yea I guess they could have ripped it off.. But it doesn't bother me. I still like the song.

The riff is very similiar, but I honestly don't think they ripped Petty off. (Keep in mind, I'm in no way, shape or form a RHCP fan.. I can only think of 2 songs from them I like).

Look at rap music.. Every fucking song sounds like the same shit and the lyrics consist of the same recycled shit.

RHCP annoy me after a short while. I can only stand so many random words in a song.

very similar, but these similar song accusations never work out. Hasnt' anyone seen that site devoted to sum 41 sounding like metallica and other bands?

[be8094b7c98]okay...[/be8094b7c98] so does rock, so does country, techno, so does every genre. but beneath that non inovating repetitive shit theres good music which you dont hear unless you're listening for it.

regards to that rhcp song, i havn't heard it or the tom petty version (and i'm not ready on account of my dialup), but is it possible it's a not really obvious cover or remake? if not (

1.) yeh, a 4 chord progression is commonly copied, but wow...even the strumming rhythm with the 4th and 5th strings on the first two beats then the rest on the top 3 strings for the measure on the chord...that is the same in both songs.
2.) Lyrics talking about states...hmmm

The thing is, every musician rips other musicians off. It's called borrowing inspiration. It's easy...you go to a club, you watch someone play and then you got it stuck in your head b/c you like it, and you write something that sounds similar. I'm sure that RHCP prolly had Tom Petty's Greatest Hits out when writing stadium arcadium and then maybe a month or so later, Anthony Kiedis pulls out some lyrics, and John Frusciante and Flea start playing somehting to it and it works out AND it happens to be the chords from "Last dance with mary Jane"

I mean fuck...my band got done playing Green Day's Longview and wrote a song that sounds a lot like it..

It's similar, but I'm going with KeithA on this one... inspired by the song seems to happen a lot in various songs.

Plus there are so many bands/songs out there and music is mostly based on various chords and rhythms, it's hard not to have something similar out there eventunally.

We'll see if Petty's lawyers smell blood on this one.

Years ago, Ray Parker Jr. got nabbed by Huey Lewis and The News. "I Want a New Drug" riff was ripped off in the song "Ghostbusters"

I'm guessing that you've all heard the Why Nickelback sucks side by side comparison

http//www.thewebshite.net/nickelback.htm

Not just parts of the song like the RHCP/TP songs. The WHOLE song syncs up.

I like the music video for that song but the song always annoyed me...

I sorta hear a similar structure, but isn't it more acceptable to rip off your own catalog than to borrow from others'?

YES! Every nickleback single is exactly like every other nickleback single. They have a formula and cook them up like chefs.

justinag06

soo that means that we are all either mindless drones to a simple music formula or they suck

man i loved that video where the singer from nickelback was singing and he was like you guys wanna rock?

then they all boo

then they chuck rocks at him

then he gets hit by a rock

then the band leaves the stage

well there is a reason they sound the same, the RHCP and Tom Petty have the same producer!!!
