i have never smoked, so i really have no advice.... but i must say, quitting is a great decision to make. really. its the best thing you can do for yourself besides not starting, so good job!

try the special gum, or just gum in general. lollipops work to, or so i have heard.

i have also heard that black licorice helps (meh... if you can stomach it!) because i overheard someone talking about how she was mad at her mom for giving her some black licorice gum and asking her to chew it.... i guess she did some research and came to the conclusion that her moms intentions were to help her quit, although, she did not want to quit.

Meh, I only smoke when I drink.

I don't know what about cigarettes people like so much that they go through 60+ a day.

Or even +20 a day for that matter. ? I heard chewing straws helps quitting easier.

My grandpa chewed gum all the time, that's how he quit.

Honestly, what is so great? I smoke like 3/week tops.

Video games are the way to go, just make sure it's not one so stressful that you want a cig to calm down =P
Alternatively there's always sex.

If your avatar isn't good enough to stare at, stare at johnjimjones'.

I heard that a pretzel in your mouth in place of a cig will help you quit. If not, you can always try one of the cigarette quitting offers. lol

some things to consider.
1. if u fail try again. the average smoker who quits needs 12 that means TWELVE attempts at quitting
2. set a date to go by, and a realistic one. u will not be successful if u go from 3 packs per day to zero in 1 day. decrease the amount. 3 months from now is a fair target date.
3. ask for help from your physician - zyban, nicorette gum/patches
4. smoking is a habit. break the habit the way you would break any behavior. if u always smoke during breakfast while having coffee do this in a room in which you would never smoke. or dont have coffee or eat indoors where u cant smoke like at starbux or something
5. u will get cranky
6. u will cough worse than before. cig smoke paralyzes ur cilia on your cells lining your airways -> no paralysis able to clear crap from your lungs -> more coughing.
1888nyquits or go to any of the government sites for quiting
good luck!

I heard somewhere that the nicotine withdraw only lasts like 1-2 weeks and after that it is just psychological? I don't think you can smoke in boot camp so you can join the armed forces ).

justinag06

26-05-2006 00:58:50

yeah how much do you smoke?

I used to smoke very little but as college progessed I smoked more and more.

It's all mental toughness, in kicking the addiction. Some people need nicotine gum, or a patch. Others think that having something in their mouth helps(gum, toothpicks, etc.). So take up that and have it on your person at all times and do it whenever you feel the urge.

Some people don't need shit, and can just quit. Read OMW's life changing rant and then go do it(j/k)

how much do you smoke? for how long? how many close friends smoke? casual? how often do you go to the bars? have you attempted quitting before?

Also what kind?

I know there is no such thing as a safe cigarette but there are differences.

I've quit both smoking and chewing tobacco. I never used gum, pretzels, licorice, or patches. I did play video games, jerk it, and have sex, but I don't think those had anything to do with it. I thought that if I relied on any of those things, I would blame them--not my own weakness--if I failed.

The only thing that worked for me was to visualize just how real the consequences of tobacco use can be. I pictured myself as my father's age, but instead of being healthy enough to spend time with my wife and kids, I was either dying of lung cancer or horribly disfigured from dip.

My parents went to a hypnotist (where they put hundreds of people in a room at $30/each) and haven't smoked since. Best thing that ever happened to us. )

As a former smoker, the best advice is to find things to keep your hands and mouth busy. This may sound stupid, but candy, carrot sticks, celery, chap-stick.... anything that simulates the smoking pattern helps during the first few weeks. Just make sure what you use isn't replacing the habit.... that's why things that are not all that enjoyable help.

Smoke free for over 3 years now and haven't had any need or want to go back. The first 20 times I tried to quit were hard. The last time stuck and it was the easiest, using the various methods above.

26-05-2006 08:18:49

i'm also gonig to try to quit...good advice in here, thx. I've quit before for 6 months...its only the first 2 weeks that are hard

26-05-2006 09:54:28

It will be almost 2 months since I quit smoking (with the exception of 1 pack at the end of the 1st month).. Just hang in there and try to quit it cold turkey even if it drives you crazy.. The shit is more addictive than heroin, so you need to work the junk out of your system the hard way to quit it for good.

Thanks for all the advice guys- I'm going down the list haha-
I played counterstrike today, staring at sexy avatars worked for a minute haha, I got that nicotine gum which is AWESOME
I always smoke while drinking and after sex, both of which are most likely going down tonight so I dunno what I'm going to do- I'll just keep my mind off of it. Thanks again everyone!

I quit awhile ago...just stopped

Just think about how disgusting it is everytime you want a smoke.

I think I survived it by replacing it with something else smokable. Every time I craved a cig I would just get torched. By the end of the day I was too burnt and tired to think about cigs. -D

in all seriousness look at some pictures of damaged lungs, mouths, throats, cancer effects, etc as a result of smoking. i know that kind of stuff is online somewhere. when i see that stuff it turns my stomach.. that and my desire towards sports and training keeps me away from smoking.

Would smoking cigars as a replacement be bad or good?
Oh yeah I forgot to say - I smoke about 10 Newports a day

nytrate

26-05-2006 16:47:06

I didn't mean cigars...

I would stay completely away from tobacco. just go cold turkey

also, don't drink for awhile

cigars can actually be worse depending on the type.
just dont smoke, anything.

just imagine that the cigar or 'rette is a cock.
would that help? shock

You smoke half a pack a day and you're going through this much withdrawl?

akalic

26-05-2006 20:59:33

smoking a cigarette is like smoking a cock, you dont' want to smoke a cigarette bud.

jy3 has some good ideas. I used to do tobacco cessation counseling and said a lot of the same stuff to people trying to quit. Maybe a couple other suggestions

MarcHart, you should try to avoid putting yourself in situations where you are going to want to smoke. If you can't avoid it, then prepare yourself by making it very inconvenient to smoke. For example, since you like to smoke after sex, then take all cigarettes and ashtrays out of the bedroom. Or, pick a girl who is totally grossed out by smoking!

Manofice, if you are going to quit, I recommend you slowly decrease the number of cigarettes you smoke. So, if you smoke a pack per day, take the pack and remove 1 cigarette. Put it away. Only allow your self 19 per day for 3 days. After that, start taking out 2 cigarettes so you only get 18 a day for 3 days, et cetera. And no bumming cigarettes off someone else!
