I just got a brand new Mac Mini from CIP. Its the Intel Core Solo 1.5ghz with 60gig hard drive and combo drive. I was wondering if its worth it to get Apple store credit for it and get a Core Duo instead.

Or...Apple has refurbished Core duo models online. If I get store credit, will I be able to purchase the refurbished Duo online.

Im not planning on doing anything hardcore on the mac like video editing or games or photoshopping. Im just wondering if its worth it. Cuz everyone is saying the Duo is faster and the Solo will become obsolete in 1year or so, cuz the 1.8 Duo will become the lowest flagship. D

If ur not planning on using it as ur main computer, the Core Solo is a fine media center or basic computer for everyday use.

You answered your own question.

You do nothing hardcore on it, your solo is fine.

i've got an old mac mini (1.53ghz from gratis, upgraded to 512mb) and i use it for watching movies/videos on the everyfreegift plasma via DVI... looks sweet, works fine, and i'm sure its much slower than an intel core. i'm sure i wouldn't use it as my day to day computer but if it can handle streaming a dvd it can't be [i87e71ffa7c]that[/i87e71ffa7c] weak.

same as admin. I still have the 256 mb memory. It is lagging but with 512 or 1gb itll be fast enough. I just use it to run front row (i have the front row hack so I can use it on a powerpc computer.)

If I was in your situation, I'd keep the Solo.. But I would also crack open that case with a putty knife and slap in at least a 120giger and upgrade the RAM to a gig.

Thanx guys for the great opinions. I think im goona just stick with the Core Solo and upgrade the ram later. I was also thinking of having an external hd to boot from. Since I have a 160gig SATA just sitting around, I might as well use it. Dont know how, but I might have to do some modding in the back in order to hook it up externally.
