it all depends on what you do on your computer... here are my suggestions
Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, ZoneAlarm Firewall, Ad-Aware SE Personal, AVG Anti-Virus, Nero Burning ROM, DAMN NFO Viewer, LimeWire PRO, DC++, Codec Pack, OpenOffice, Azureus (or ABC), BCWipe, WinRAR/WinZip, AnyDVD, and DVD Shrink...

Disregard h3x's recommendation of AVG Anti Virus and get Kaspersky instead.
Also, Spybot Search and Destroy, Xp Repair Pro 2006, WinXP Manager, jv16 Powertools 2006, Winamp, CCleaner and Tuneup Utilities 2006.

NFO viewers display them better. DVDShrink is a must and so is a codec pack and AutoGK for me...
