I'm going to college this fall and I'm looking for a job this summer to pay for some of my expenses. I'd like to be a part-time package handler at UPS.

However, the UPS closest to me only offers the Sunrise/Preload (330 AM-830 AM) shift (according to upsjobs.com). Is there anyway I could get the job at a more reasonable shift/time period (perhaps by calling)?

Also, does anyone know anything about the UPS Earn & Learn program? And for those who have had part time jobs, where are some places I should check out?

It won't do you any harm to call up and ask them if there are any other shifts available and there's probably only one way to find out.

UPS is pretty gay with shifts. They have more people working at night than during the day, so it's pretty hard to get a day job there. I had one for awhile, but they decided to switch me to sunrise.

The earn and learn is alright. They'll reimburse you $1500 a semester/ $3000 a year for school. Bad thing is that they only give you the money after the semester is over. So you have to pay for it initially and then get the money from them. Kind of like a mail in rebate.

Also, I dont think UPS does summer jobs. They have temp jobs during the christmas season, but that's it. They really frown on people not staying at least a year. If you leave for any reason short of a year, they refuse to hire you back.

I just started at UPS about 3 weeks ago. I don't even get benefits for 6 months. But it's good pay, and it's perfect for college (I'm doing the twilight shift). They love college ppl. who will stay for 4 years then quit (they don't want to keep anyone for too long since it gets expensive for them). Agree w/ TSJ, just call the HR guy and ask them if you could get a job in the night/twilight shift. They'll more than likely work something out for you wink

How much do they pay an hour?

Is that in addition to the college reimbursement?

UPS is damn near slave labor...I don't know anyone that has worked there and liked it. The thing is, they hire 23490832942 part-time workers to avoid paying benefits; this allows them to pay a pretty competitive hourly wage, though...so like some of you have said...its not a [ie11b5f2546]terrible[/ie11b5f2546] job for college students.

Last summer, and as of this past Sunday, this summer, I've worked as a selector @ a P&C Distribution Center. It's unionized so there are frequent contract raises...I made $10.40/hour last year, up to $11.60 this year ) I work 2nd shift (600PM to completion) 4 days a week...and can pick up the 5th day or OT hours pretty much whenever I want to.

Whaaat??

That sounds awesome, you get paid and get a workout, plus you can get college reimbursement shock ....doesn't sound that bad to me, I might go for it...

Hehe, that's true. I've only been working there for a little and I've slimmed down a lot. All the loaders are skinny. It is hard work, and the first month is probably the hardest, but most ppl. there say your body gets used to the labor after about 3 weeks.

They won't hire you if you're going to school out of town. But most workers there are college students.
