Obviously photoshop, but GIMP (free) is a good replacement too.

The Gimp rocks for free full-featured editing, but can be daunting for noobs.

Another freebie that probably a lot easier to use is Paint.NET. I haven't tried it yet but I hear it's pretty good for free.

I definitely wouldn't recommend buying Photoshop to anyone -- if you REALLY lineedli Photoshop, you would already know to buy it.

If you are just doing image resizing, cropping, etc, I'd go with Gimp or Paint Shop Pro.

[b4acc97a797]Ulead PhotoImpact[/b4acc97a797] is great. It has a very wide range of tools and effect filters, is compatible with Photoshop plugins, allows for vectors, and has a full suite of web optimization tools (GIF animator, image compression tool, etc.) It's also less than $100.

At Cnet, it looks like version 10 is the most popular...

I agree, hell you can download ImageResizer here[=http//download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe]here which is a MS app that adds itself to the right click context menu and allows simple resizing.

most people dont even know how to use photoshop for the features it has, i havent used it but I have heard that photoshop elements does all the things most people need to do, so its like 40 bucks and it would be legit.

I should look into it. For my photography, all I do is some resizing/cropping for uploading pics.. and some minor color saturation and balance changes. I'd rather use a legal copy of Elements if it does all of that.

We use Elements at work. It's good, but I still prefer PhotoImpact...

Elements is OK, but it lacks quite a few of the features I use Photoshop for. I only used Elements to try it out since I got it free with my Digital Rebel.

You can have it if you want CG? It's a legit copy with a serial number. I don't even have it installed. shrug

That would be awesome, TSJ. Are you shipping it (I'll pay the shipping), or can I get it electronically from you?

theysayjump

It'd have to be shipped.

Or you could download the trial and I'll give you the serial. wink

It's only a CD. Make it $5? So I can buy a padded envelope and buy insurance and shit. shrug

Is there any program like "Iphoto" for a PC? that keeps all of your pics in a pogram that has some easy editing tools? Or do I just have to wait for a MacBook Pro?

dmorris68

I've never used iPhoto, but Microsoft's Digital Image Suite 2006 has an awesome photo library and some easy-to-use photo editing tools.

Check out Picasa from Google, it's free of course. Also, it integrates with Hello, which is a peer-to-peer image sharing program (very cool)

Ooh, tell me more about Hello - that sounds really slick.

I really like Picasa. We considered using it at work to organize a vast library of digital images until we realized that it isn't possible for users on different computers to search a single, shared index. But it's great for personal use.

If anybody has a relatively large photo collection and is interested to learn how to organize it, here's an excellent article from O'Reilly that discusses rating and tagging your photos to simplify retrieval
