Hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.


According to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in Szeged in the south of Hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.

The website said that the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.

According to the website, workers said the rum in the 300-liter barrel had a "special taste" so they even decanted a few bottles of the liquor to take home.

The wife has since died and the man was buried in a proper grave.

I'd assume that the guy not only pissed himself, but also shit himself, before he died...that's where the special taste is coming from.

No, I think they put him in there way after he died, they just put in there so they wouldn't have to pay for anything, not because he died.....

So i'm not sure if I missed t his, but didn't his body decompose? Or did the alcohol preserve him? Was it just bones? Drinking rum with decomposed flesh would have me puking for weeks.

I'm not sure how good of a preserver alcohol is when it comes to flesh and things like that....I'm pretty sure it would be decomposed flesh with bones hanging out and hair everywhere, you know, sick stuff like that...It's probably one of the grossest stories I've ever heard in my life....

I think alcohol is a pretty good preservative, so if the proof was high enough the body should have been fairly well pickled, and the alcohol would have sanitized the rum. From a health standpoint there was probably no risk. From a psychological perspective, I think I'd have to hurl. For days. shock

Well, I don't KNOW that it can preserve a human, but I've heard of it being used to preserve insects and such. Same principle I would guess -- it takes bacterial processes to cause decay in tissue, and I don't know of any bacteria that can live in alcohol (hence its use as a disinfectant/sanitizer). Purely speculation on my part... ;)

I was thinking that too, that alcohol kills bateria and that's what causes decay, but it just seems like there would be something else to it....It's a head-scratcher for sure, I might have to look into this one...

Preservatives are basically alcohol and disinfectant. So yeah, good rum could probably keep the dude relatively preserved.
