I would just wait it out and see which contender comes out on top.. I'd hate to plunk down $500 for a [b2953de86af]Beta[/b2953de86af]

I was going to buy one but I'm going to wait till after E3 to see how much the 360 add on is instead. I think is is going to win over blu ray.

maybe but if I had to pick one to buy blu ray has more of the movie studios behind it, and better movies availible

this is like the 1000th topic on this

Doesn't Blue Ray have larger capacity and actually use MPEG-4?

and isn't HD DVD strictly MPEG-2.. Sounds like no big deal.. Just a Super Size DVD.

I think blu-ray will win out over HD-DVD. I dont wanna buy an upconverting DVD player only to replace it with a blu-ray player in a few months so im waiting for the ps3 to be released.

Blu-Ray is technologically superior to HD-DVD and has more media/entertainment companies behind it (HD-DVD has more computer companies behind it).

But the best doesn't always win -- remember Betamax/VHS and OS2/Win95? Betamax and OS2 where both technologically superior to VHS and Win95, but both lost because they couldn't market themselves very well.

It all comes down to marketing, something Microsoft is a genius at. While Sony is seen as a cutting-edge company, they are also very closed and proprietary, which might possibly scare off the market and investors in an age where openness is the word of the day. Microsoft is a major backer of HD-DVD and, while they aren't exactly a proponent of open standards either, in recent years they have recognized the futility of resisting open standards completely, and have been throwing bones to the open markets. So Microsoft's marketing muscle could very well out maneuver Sony's, in which case HD-DVD could win. HD-DVD also has the benefit of being first to market and cheaper to manufacture using existing DVD fabrication technology, while Blu-Ray isn't out yet and requires a significant factory retooling leading to greater expense and more delay.

It's just too early to tell. I want Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, and will probably buy a PS3 before an Xbox360 (unless I get a free 360 or PS3 is delayed another year). But I'm not entirely confident that Blu-Ray will survive if it even makes to market.

dmorris I've made that same argument 100 times but no one seems to get it. Sony sucks at proprietary as well. I'm not going to get either until I'm sure one is going to win )

LOL, I typed a 2-paragraph argument criticizing Sony's insistence on pushing proprietary storage formats...then I realized it was old and beat and thought better of posting it.
