OK so when you click save for a file in XP it brings up the "Save As" box and there are 5 folders on the left to choose from. I always hated the choices they gave and figured out a way to change them.

TweakUI all the way. Been running it since Win95. It does this for you, plus a jillion other tweaks to Windows, and it's from Microsoft.

Any idea how to change the default in Save As... dialogs so it doesn't automatically go to My Documents? I would love to default that to another directory...

Did you read the OP, Wolfeman couldn't have been more explicit in explaiing how to do what you're asking.

doylnea That isn't what I'm talking about. I mean when any third party program wants to save something and you choose the directory, it defaults to My Documents... like below

http/" alt=""/img52.imageshack.us/img="52/9017/doc5ep.jpg[" alt=""/imgbdfdc4354c]

There has to be a setting in Windows that programs read to know which directory to default to. And I'm not talking about a default directory setting in each program.

mine always defaults to the last dir i picked

PsychoAU, that is controllable by the application. Any app can decide where your default location is, and if not specified most file prompt controls will default to My Documents.

Because this is under application control, there is no universal way to change it that I could think of. You might find something that would work for a few programs, but not across the board.

You can however change the location of My Documents. I always point mine to my D drive.
