[quote9eea8f7235="Slashdot"]"One faction within Microsoft is promoting a bold strategy in the company's battle with Google Join forces with Yahoo[=http//online.wsj.com/article/SB114662449016042303.html]Join forces with Yahoo. That would be a major departure for Microsoft, the software maker that is legendary for toiling on its own until it captures a new market. However, people familiar with the situation say that Microsoft has considered the idea of acquiring a stake in Yahoo, and that the two companies have discussed possible options over the course of the past year. Currently, talks of an equity stake in Yahoo don't appear to be active, given that Microsoft is focusing on a reorganization that it hopes will re-energize its effort to compete with Google. Two wild cards remain Steve Ballmer, who has historically shunned large acquisitions, and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, whose support would be key to bringing the necessary Yahoo shareholders on board for a deal. Mr. Yang and others in Yahoo would be hard-pressed to sell to Microsoft, people close to the company say. However, people familiar with Microsoft say its top management remains open to a deal with Yahoo as pressure grows to perform better against Google. The increasing pressure on Microsoft -- not just from Google, but also from its own shareholders, as well as from advertisers that want an alternative to Google -- could help to justify the acquisition or some kind of business collaboration, these people say."[/quote9eea8f7235]

[b9eea8f7235]Summary[/b9eea8f7235] Microsoft wants to merge with Yahoo to take on Google.

I think that would be a really strange move of Microsoft. And I doubt that both those companies could take on Google. Yahoo's business strategy is all messed up, they try to do everything, rather than stick to one thing and be good at that. Microsoft is thinking, but they need to get a better company if they plan to compete with Google.

Agreed. Why would anyone buy that shite of a company, Yahoo? But...it is Microsoft...just another shitty business venture. I think they should start from scratch and reinvent themselves instead of buying failed internet companies.

That 'shite of a company' had a net income of $1.9 billion last year.

Whether you like Yahoo or not, they are far from a "failed internet company." They're one of the leaders right along with MS and Google. I think it says a lot that M$ actually has a worthy competitor, let alone that they are [i892c989477]worried[/i892c989477] about the competitor. The merger wouldn't affect me much at all though, as I use neither MSN nor Yahoo.

That's what I'm trying to get at. Most computer-savvy people don't use Yahoo!, instead they use Google for its simplicity. Google pretty much got its popularity thru word-of-mouth via the internet. Whereas I still see Yahoo TV ads begging people to use their search engine (Ask Jeeves also). I just think they're grasping at straws...shrug

Most people on the internet aren't really computer savvy, and Yahoo's not begging anybody, they get "100 million people visiting its site a month, making it the most popular Web site in the U.S. (from article)" Where did you think they were making that money from?

That being said, this idea is probably hatched up by some greedy investment bankers.

It'd be really 1337 if M$ just merged with Google.

just a blurb from the WSJ -
MS released their adCenter on 5/4 and dumped Yahoo as their ad provider. There's no way they're merging.

Yahoo.com is my homepage. It's good looking, and it has all of the things I ask for in a search engine right in one page.
