I can deal with fucking spiders running across my floor, I kill scorpions in my room.......

But i was fucking speechless when a god-damned gecco ran across my floor. Shit. The A/C is on in the house, and all the doors are closed, I just don't get it. This angers me! Didn't look anything like the friendly Geico commercial gecco with the friendly British accent. Shit.

Told you it was rated R shock

03-05-2006 07:09:11

ah... that picture there, that would be a "house centipede". they can appear absolutey ginormous, but without their legs, their bodies are maybe an inch or so long. their legs, though, and antenna, are very long. they also shed their legs with they are touched.

my old high school building used to have them. the dorms here at college appear to have them, as well... at least the two rooms i have been in. suprising, though, because the facilities are actually very nice, i have to admit.

they thrive in dark, damp areas.... basements, really. thats why is you flip on the light in a room, you will see them completely DART across the floor into a dark place. they hate light.

last year in my dorm, i was up until 6 am one night/morning trying to get rid of one. it ended like this i finally found it on the ceiling, and since i had a small ightweight vacuum cleaner, i held it up and tried to smash the bug with the handle. didnt work... it just shed a couple legs.... the legs DANGLED about two feet down from the bug from an extremely thin string of SOMETHING.... it was absolutely terrifying! about five seconds after i stared in horror at the hanging legs, the bug dropped, and i proceeded to grind it so deep into the carpet that nothing was left of it. what was left is probably still there to this day.

last fall when i moved in to my new room, i found TWO of them. the first one prompted me to get one of those huge jugs of bug spray and spray a bit. the second one prompted me to open the wondow and empty about half of it into the area of the heater (the kind along the floor/wall). it took a couple hours to dry, i almost vomited, i had a headache, i was unable to breathe well at all, and i felt like i was dying. all that bug spray probably probably caused brain damage. but after some time and fresh air, i was okay, and i never saw another one of the damn things. now, if i see one in my new apartment, i will probably begin to consider suicide because that will mean that they are COMING AFTER ME. my boyfriend smashed a bug last night, and the first thing he said was "dont worry, its not one of those house centipedes!" this is after he admitted to finding and killing a bug back in the dorm while i was in the shower... i asked him if he was a house centipede, and he gave me his "um... nooo...." denial that he gives me when he lies (8)) and he said he wasnt sure what i was talking about... i told him to google 'house centipede', so he did, and he about jumped out of the chair and said "oh GOD no!"

now, i am not sure if they pose a threat. i know that they eat other bugs, but i have also heard they have a nasty venomous bite... i will not rule that out, because from what i have read, centipedes ARE venemous and they do bite, while milipedes are the safe ones. on top of all the ugly, thats why i do not hesitate to smash the things when i see them.

but anyways, the only thing i am deathy afraid of are spiders. when i was little, i was fine with them. i woudl carry the hige black and yellow carden spiders in to my mom, and she would ABOLSUTELY HAVE A HEART ATTACK oh my god she hated them. at leats that is what i am told.... i can never remember a time where i wasnt afraid of them. my conclusions are that i liked them, but my mom gave me the idea that they are terrible and i should be afrtaid of them. so thats how i am now. i am a bit better than i used to be... when i was a kid, it prevented me from playing. if i saw a spider on a swingset, i didnt play on it for the rest of the year. my back yard was surrounded by a tall wooden fence that attracted "daddy long legs", and i hardly wanted to go outside. i couldnt touch the brick on the house, either, because spiders loved that.
well, that ruined my day... i never realized just how crippling my depressing childhood really was.... heh.

[quote45fced49ff="myreferrals1234"]holy crap..... i have a few daddy long legs in the shower, and I thought liIli had it bad....

i'm going to have nightmares about that thing crawling around in my ears and mouth at night... grossssss[/quote45fced49ff]

I'm not a big fan of bugs and spyders, but i'm not really scared of them either... i like messing around with them before killing them... i don't kill daddy long legs tho, i play with them... they are the most poisonous spider but their mouths aren't big enough to bite your skin...

The thing that was the worst in my house (didn't bother me, i've had pets before) was a snake one day, it was great, my mom was so scared... we found it in our basement, and then we were telling her how they can crawl up stairs, and usually go torwards heat, so since she keeps her room the hotest in the house it would be headed that way, probably under the covers... she was scared for months! haha

My first negative bug experience happened when I was a kid, when my mom dragged me along while she visited a friend's house. We drove up into his driveway, and he opened the garage.

I'm not exaggerating one bit, when I say hundreds of spiders about five or six inches across began to swarm up the door and out onto the driveway towards the car. I had to be dragged out of the car while the guy kept saying they were harmless. I remember seeing them start to climb the roof as we went through the front door.

I never pinned down which type they were (Daddy long legs, Harvestmen, whatever) but the guy was a nut to live like that.

My first [i21246dede8]positive[/i21246dede8] experience, was with caterpillars me and my friends would find in the park. We'd find one climbing a tree, put our hand in their path until they were in our palms, and pass it from hand to hand before putting it back on the tree.

Caterpillars have nothing to fear from me. ;)

I think that thing about the Daddy Long Legs being the most venomous spider is a myth and it isn't true.

Yeah, the Daddy Longlegs thing is a myth. ALL spiders are venemous, but there is no truth to the Daddy Longlegs being "the most venemous."

[quote70beca48b1]There is no reference to any pholcid spider biting a human and causing any detrimental reaction. If these spiders were indeed deadly poisonous but couldn't bite humans, then the only way we would know that they are poisonous is by milking them and injecting the venom into humans. For a variety of reasons including Amnesty International and a humanitarian code of ethics, this research has never been done. Furthermore, there are no toxicological studies testing the lethality of pholcid venom on any mammalian system (this is usually done with mice). Therefore, no information is available on the likely toxic effects of their venom in humans, so the part of the myth about their being especially poisonous is just that a myth. There is no scientific basis for the supposition that they are deadly poisonous and there is no reason to assume that it is true.[/quote70beca48b1]

The Daddy Longlegs is not even in the same family as other spiders. For example, they only have two eyes and one body segment. Also, it does not have venom glands that have an affect on humans, but it does have a stink glan....

However, it is possible for them to break human skin, but it requires lots of work to annoy them to that point.

In the movie Arachnaphobia. What kind of badass spiders were they?

I don't remember, but I do remember that they were fictional. No such spider existed, the name/species was made up for the movie.

The most venomous spider known to man is the funnel web spider of Australia. One good bite is almost certain death within an hour or two if you don't get antivenin treatment. Oz also has 8 or 9 of the world's most venomous snakes, the Box Jellyfish (one of the most venomous creatures on earth), and an overabundance of great white sharks. Seems like a nice enough place to live... shock
