Making sure you have a PCI Express slot in your computer would be a good start (since its new, it probably does, but never hurts to check).
I'm guessing the 256 is cheaper and I'd go with that shrug, I have a 256MB GeForce 5800 Go on my laptop and runs Oblivion great.

I actually bought a Dimension 1300 and found out to my dismay that it only had pci express x1, so I returned it before opening it and bought the 5150 for only $80 more. And I got a 2 inch larger flat-panel, twice the hdd, dual core, and a few other extras. D
Anyway.... About the 512 vs 256, if you clicked on the pictures that 256 has a massize fan that looks like it could really help and it has better core clock/regular clock that the 512, I am just trying to figure out what is good about the 512 (having twice the memory of the 256 with only $20 more price, something must be better)

nvidia 6800gs will do you pretty well for around the same price range as the x800

Yeah, I can't find it for quite as cheap, but it does have a lot of power. I'm looking at spending around $140 tops.

7300gt is like 80 bucks and is a pretty good performer, especially if you can get your hands on the ddr3 version

Personally I'm a nvidia guy. I would go for the 7600GS...its like 115 but you can find it for 100. Its basically a 7600GT with a couple of pipelines disabled. (Obviously there are more differences).
