[quote9c20341327]Anchorage, Alaska - If Alaska Natives are right, then Alaska really is Seward's folly. Today the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council made a stunning announcement it plans to take the United States before the United Nations this summer. It's a case that could overturn the 1867 treaty by which the United States bought Alaska from Russia.[/quote9c20341327]

They also plan on going before Geneva and plea the case...

shock shock shock

Alaska becoming its own nation? This place is crazy!!

Any intelligent Alaskan wants them to drill oil.. You know why?? Our annual subsidation checks would be FAT..

I hope we break away from the Union.. That would be great.. We don't need you guys.. We got all the oil to make us richer than the U.S. is right now, three-fold. P

Yeah.. Let Canada have Alaska.. It IS connected to them.. Besides, when you think about it.. What gave the U.S. the right to cut a slice, saying "This part is mine.. You can have the rest, Canada". ?

Oh well...

We didn't take anything from Canada, and Russia sold it because they feared that they would not be able to defend it against an attack from a warring country. They negotiated an exchange with then Secretary of State William Seward in 1867. He agreed to buy the land for 7.2 million. It became known as Seward's Folly, or Seward's Icebox. The American public and press ridiculed the purchase because they felt that Alaska had already been stripped bare of all of its assets and that we purchased the empty container which used to hold treasure.

Doesn't seem like such a bad investment to me, about $.02 an acre.

H3x, did you enjoy celebrating Seward's Day on the last monday in March?

You guys know that the oil we are all talking about drilling is just oil we THINK is there, and even if it IS there (in the amounts we think it is), it will only account for about 2% of our daily consumption if drilled at maximum capacity? Something to think about...

Also, if I were one of those radical environmentalist, I'd be far more worried about Global Warming (and its effects on Alaskan wildlife) than drilling in ANWAR (

[quotea88a4c0367="Agent Smith"]I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species that I realized you aren't actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. And the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we...are the cure.[/quotea88a4c0367]

Also, drilling oil here won't hurt anything.. All these wackjob environmentalists don't have a clue what they are talking about...

Speaking of age restrictions on getting drunk and gambling...

Here in Alaska, the legal age where you are considered an adult is 19 (as opposed to 18 in the Lower 48.)... The legal age to purchase tobacco and tobacco related products is also 19 and requires ID in order to complete the transaction (now, I know thats obvious, but the funny part is... Everyone regardless of age is required to show ID.. I was at Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago and some lady carded a man in his late 70's to early 80's for a pack of cigarettes, he didn't have the ID on him and she told him 'I can't sell it you then.' shock . Here's the funny part... Alcohol still remains at 21, but they do not card (unless you apparently look to be under the age.. They merely ask for your birthdate, punch it into the computer and complete the transaction...). Nightclubs are different however, they will card you. Gambling is 19 here as well...

As far as I know every walmart requires an ID to purchase tobacco... at least here it is, i've seen old people get carded and not sold to because they didn't have it... shrug Seems like it's crap there, higher age restrictions...

At Walgreen's we are supposed to card under 40.

I always feel like a tool carding someone that is 30ish, so I generally don't and just make up birthdates to put in.

Every country has something offer, whether you like them or not. No country is better or greater than an other country. I love my country but I don't think it's the greatest and that any other country is shit.

Also, there's nothing wrong with draft dodging. You shouldn't have to fight a war you don't believe in. Everyone should be given a choice, not made to fight wars that rich old men think you should. I had to register with the SSS just to fucking live here, but there's not a chance in hell I'd fight for this country (or any country including my own) in a war, so I'd fuck off back home or somewhere else.

We (the admin/mod team) aren't really supposed to engage in political discussion....which pretty much limited me to posting the quote I posted )

To sum it up If the draft were reinstated, not only would I fight for my country, I would do so willingly, and with great pride. I actually almost attended college through the Army ROTC program, but decided against it when I was recruited for football. My generation is the first in my family's history not to serve in any branch of the military.

Admin didn't tell me that during my, err, indoctrination. oops

It's okay though, I tend to not debate politics in public forums anyway, any more than I like to bang my head bloody against a brick wall (which has pretty much the same result, a headache, and the wall doesn't budge). I wasn't intending to debate it anyway, just presenting a voice of experience on the subject.
