As if everyone waiting for their iPod needs something else to worry about, the wonderful folks at iPodLounge[=http//www.ipodlounge.com]iPodLounge have again recompiled known information about the reported audio defect[=http//www.ipodlounge.com/articles_more.php?id=4776_0_8_0_M]reported audio defect in the latest iPods. Apparently, quite a few owners of new iPods have reported extra-musical noise coming from their earbuds
[quote8395e55cca][b8395e55cca]What is the Audio Defect [/b8395e55cca]"Users of affected iPods will be able to hear a hard disk-like whirring sound in their earphones, coupled with several seconds of light static at the start of a song that has just been loaded. This should not be confused with the quiet hard disk loading sounds that an iPod makes, which sounds are not audible through earphones, or with normal static-like compression artifacts in your audio."[/quote8395e55cca]

It's said that the noise is more apparent with superior-to-Apple earphones, and I plan on finding out immediately about mine once my E2Cs are connected.

This possibility is concerning all 4G iPods to date.

I sincerely hope apple jumps on this.. maybe some kind of firmware upgrade could fix it.. but for how much these things cost you had better not have one damn problem with them.

I doubt it.

If it is some kind of static interference, then that sounds like something not grounded, or some kind of intermittent short etc.

That would be hardware, and would require shipping it back. (

Now I wonder, if you said it was a gift, would any brick & mortar retailers allow a straight exchange due to this? (Not for 40GB trade-up etc)

Possibly, because they're so new, and if you bought it at a store even on the first day they were available, you'd probably still be within the return policy. Best Buy and CC are getting more into tracking of customer purchases, so it might be harder than in the past.

At my little store, we wouldn't because we don't have the volume, and there's a chance we'd be stuck with it.
