Since installing zonealarm pro on 1/24/06 I have had 8,345,456+ attacks and over 85% have been high rated. Is this normal? It looks like a progressive jackpot at casino that keeps counting higher and higher. Any advice?

I don't know exact figures but it's probably normal. The only advice anyone can give you is to keep your firewall up. If you don't have a router, you can get one so it can block these connection attempts and your PC takes a lot less load.

I was given a school router that doesn't have a firewall on it. That could be why because I am use to having one at home that was a firewall.
Woah, I've had 45,882. 154 have been high rated and I've had ZoneAlarm for a while. Just an example.

stop looking at porn, that may help some.

Realize that the more attempts that a (free) software based firewall shows you, the more you're likely to "upgrade" and buy their full suite of software. 8mm seems high though.

What kind of "attacks"?

It might be normal. It doesn't sound like your school gave you a router, it sounds like they gave you a modem. All NAT routers inherently work as a firewall. Unless the router is configured to NAT liallli traffic to your PC, it should be blocking everything coming in from outside. Dong so will reduce the load on your PC.
I have a Linux router/gateway PC running iptables as my firewall. I had so many incoming attempts I had to stop logging them because my drive was churning non-stop. I run Kerio Personal Firewall (much better than ZA, IMO) for outbound reporting on my Windows PC, but nothing ever gets past the Linux firewall.

NAT acts as a kind of firewall it really offers little security. Could be that you are on a edu and just getting scanned a lot or it thinks something you do regularly is a threat.

Going off topic just for a second...how do you check the amount of attacks on your firewall?

I think software firewalls are kinda useless. I trust my hardware router...

Well, it depends. If you subscribe to the theory of security in layers, as most diehard professional IT people do, then that's an extra layer.
Me, I consider them pretty much useless in practical terms for INBOUND traffic, since nothing is getting past my Linux gateway/firewall. However for outbound traffic that you may not want to get out (applications that "phone home," spyware, trojans, etc.) that hardware router isn't going to help you. You need a software firewall to pop up and ask if you want to allow this process to talk to the internet. Then you know who's trying to get out and can allow/deny at will.
That is unusually high.. It should be more in the 100,000-300,000 range.
good firewalls are ones who talk like this )

You are probably loaded with trojans and spyware. Here are some good free programs that I use, and I have never been hacked and my firewall only blocks like 100 every month.. S
Spybot S & D - Free
Ad-Aware - Free
AVG Anti-Virus - Free (WAY BETTER THAN NORTON AND MCAFEE)
ZoneAlarm - Free (I USE FREE BECAUSE PRO MAKES MY SPEED SLOW)
Also, Windows Defender is a EXCELLENT antispyware program also.
