The original (well, the second one that was the talkie) is probably the best film ever made, and buying it on DVD was one of the best investments I ever made too. It just works on every level. Great acting (an amazing cast for its day), great effects (many that were invented for the film), and a great story (whether you believe it or not).
Here's a bit of trivia The film only missed being best picture that year, because the producer of the winner, Around The World In 80 Days (not worth comparing), had been very active philanthropically. The academy gave him the Oscar in acknowledgment of that, totally screwing over DeMille in the process. He never forgave the academy for it, and rightfully so.
