If you're willing to accept EDTV instead of HDTV, you can find several under that price. Going HDTV you'l probably only find the cheaper/crappier models like Pioneer (non-Elite) in that price. Panasonc makes some of the nicest plasmas, and they have a couple 42" models that you can find online in the $2200 range. Here are some PriceGrabber results. Click each model to see the vendors and their shipping costs.

Buying in a B&M store will almost certainly be more expensive, and you'd be hard pressed to find a 42" HDTV plasma for under $2K with tax, unless it's a low-end brand like Magnavox, Polaroid, RCA, etc.

That's a general statement that is largely incorrect. It depends on the specific LCD you buy. In terms of television image quality, plasma is better than almost any LCD on the market. LCD suffers from screen door effect and slow refresh rate (plasma has virtually a 0ms response time). The only technology for TV that I would rate at or better than plasma is Sony's SXRD LCoS technology. It looks better than plasma (to me) without any of the drawbacks. The only thing is you can't hang it on a wall.
I agree though that I would pursue HDTV over EDTV, no matter which type panel you choose, unless you have no HDTV service and don't plan to get it. Once you've seen a true HDTV signal at 1080i, you'll throw rocks at EDTV.

As far as image quality to cost ratio, I agree. Some things about DLP I don't care for, however I was all for DLP and just about to buy one, until Sony released the consumer SXRD models and I bought the 60-incher. ;) So much for cost ratios, but after laying eyes on the SXRD I knew I couldn't settle for any less.

The SXRD? I bought it the day Sony dropped the MSRP $500. So I paid $4500 instead of $5000.

Thats a little out of my price range. I'm looking for something around $2K...
You will kick yourself in the ass if you don't get a high-end LCD.

I like DLPs more than LCDs...

So do I. But if he wants a flat-panel TV on his wall, its gonna have to be either LCD or Plasma.. and I'd go with the LCD.
