Last week I woke up and my laptop was plugged into the wall and it said 25% left on battery. For some reason it is not reading the AC conection and once the battery died that was it. It only runs off battery. I have a bunch of stuff I need off that computer but no one I know has that model so I can use their battery. Can I open it up to tinker with it or am a screwed? It's a Latitude D610. Thanks!

I work with alot of latitude D610's here at work. It sounds like your need a new power cord. I don't think opening it up and "tinkering" with it will do any good. I don't know off the top of my head but does your power cord have a green light on it? If it does and its on still doesn't mean its a good cord...but i would suggest a new cord.

When did you buy the notebook?

I only mention this because if you did buy it during the period mentioned, you can get the battery replaced for free, and you can get the stuff off of the laptop. ) GOOD LUCK!

pm me the PPID on the batter if you want me to check if your battery is a bad battery...The numbers/letters on on a white strip of paper in a serial number format XX-XXXXXX-XXXXX-XXX-XXXX
OR if u want me to check your AC power adapter provide me with the
P/N
Manufacting code in the DS/N code TH-0XXXXX-XXXXX-XXX-XXXX
the second set of X's is this code
Date codethe 3rd set of X's
This is all found on the AC adapter

If you need the data off the computer quickly, the hard drive is easily removable. Remove it, and use an adapter to connect it to a desktop pc and it'll show up as another HD. Then you can get the data off it that you need. That adapter is only $10 as well, pretty cheap if the data is needed.

I have a green light on the power cord and I used someone else's cord to try and get a charge but no luck.
The power cord info is cn-0n2765-47890-4b6-0396
Battery infojp-0c2603-48330-522-6fkn
That adapter thing sounds like a good idea. Would I need to have Windows XP to pull the info off if I had XP on my laptop?

Well your cord and battery were not ones that were recalled. Was the other cord for exactly the same computer (D610)?

eeep. sounds like the problem i had. verdict motherboard, and hopefully you have a warranty. here is what i wrote in another thread a few days ago...
"i have nad my inspiron 5100 since january of 2004 (its a fossil) and i have only encountered one problem, and its one that i guess most laptops in general encounter sooner or later, usually later. the "prongs" or whatever they are called, the metal that is attached to the motherboard that connects to the AC adapter when the computer is plugged in, came loose. for a couple days i couldnt understand why my computer was shut down and out of power when i woke up, and it took me forever to get the comuetr to realize it was plugged in to AC power. i did a bit of research, and realized i had a $500 porblem, or so i read. thinking my warranty had been up for exactly a year, i just about cried. but then i realized that my dad had been very persistant it getting the extended warranty, which i realized covers my computer until a nice 2008. within a week, there was someone at my house fixing it for free."
someone in my office had this exact same problem with a toshiba laptop. its something that can happen to any laptop, not just dell, and it is a pain.

It was a cord from a different computer but the battery was the same so I figured it would work. Her Dell has a bad battery so I couldn't use it. Sounds like I am F'ed because it is not under warranty anymore. Can I open it and wiggle the motherboard prongs to get a connection?

i dont think that would work... from what i understood (browsing the dell forums), when this happens, the prongs just break off and cant really be repaired.
if its not under warranty anyway, then i guess opening it yourself wouldnt void a warranty, so if you know what yorue doing, you can probably look around it. just be careful to keep track of all the little screws and where everything goes! i watched the guy take mine apart... i am not computer illiterate, but if i took my laptop apart, i would probably cry. i had to take it apart enough to lift the keyboard out to soak up some chinese food sauce out of the thing (tab button is still not 100%, but its pretty good now), and it was quite scary. if you know how to take everything apart and install/uninstall things, then i guess it wouldnt hurt to see if you can replace it yourself. you could also call dell and see how much it would be to have it fixed.

I still would find someone with a D610 charger..but it could be the motherboard...it does happen alot with dells. I actually have to replace a D600 motherboard today.

we have two d610s at work that are just dead and out of warranty as well. they'll likely just sit on a shelf until they are thrown away as it costs too much to fix them since it seems like the motherboard is at fault also. you might be able to sell it off for parts on ebay...

OK, I bought an external casing and pulled the HD out. I can copy all the files but it says I can't delete the files because I don't have permission. I am using a Mac to view them if that helps. I need to get rid of some pictures before I sent it back to work. Help!

if you got your files off can't you just format it? use disk utility.
