does anyone know if you can upgrade an iBooks video card? i'm talking about the new one that you can find on the apple web site. This is what the web site says it has

ATI Mobility Radeon 9550
32MB DDR video memory

does anyone know of any good replacements, or can you just put any old vid card in there? i don't know much about computers (i can handle myself though)...but unfortunately i'm even worse with macs. i know nothing. if you could help me out that'd be awesome. thanks

I don't think upgrading a video card in a laptop is very easy ?

The only thing you really need to worry about is that its MAC/iBook compatable.

Wolfeman, surprisingly they aren't all that difficult to swap out video cards on lappys. (Not familiar with MAC's guts though)

ok i didn't know if like they only accepted a certain brand of cards or anything like that. cuz i mean really 32mb on a vid card...that's crap. i'll def be getting an upgrade when i get mine. thanks i guess when it comes time i'll just shop around and see what i can find.

also, is there a difference for laptops vs. regular comps when it comes to vid cards? thanks

The original iBook has a 2X-AGP ATI RAGE Mobility video controller with 4 MB of SDRAM, the "Indigo" iBook series has a 2X-AGP ATI RAGE Mobility video controller with 8 MB of SDRAM, the iBook "500" and iBook "600" models have a 2X-AGP ATI RAGE Mobility 128 video controller with 8 MB of SDRAM, and the iBook "600" and iBook "700" models have a 2X-AGP ATI Mobility Radeon video controller with 16 MB of SDRAM. The iBook "700" and iBook "800" models have a 2X-AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 video controller with 16 MB or 32 MB of VRAM.

All iBook "G4" models shipped between October 22, 2003 and July 26, 2005 have a a 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM. The currently shipping iBook "G4" models, introduced July 26, 2005 have a 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 graphics card with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM.

[b36066bf36a]Is the video controller on the iBook upgradable?[/b36066bf36a]

No. The video controller is soldered to the motherboard, and cannot be upgraded beyond the pre-installed amount of SDRAM.

32MB is plenty for a laptop. Its not like you'll be gaming or doing video editing on an iBook...

i can play halo and quake 3 fine.

if you wanna know how any specific things perform just ask

according to the service manual you can't even replace the gpu if it dies. you'd have to replace the whole logic board i think. definitely no upgrading.
just wait for the dual core intel widescreen ibook when they announce them next month. ah, then again they'll probably have shared video memory though. still, those are going to be sweet!
