[quote5bb90fc0bb]Today, Sony officially conceded defeat to the recent flurry of rumors and speculation, with Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reporting the company has confirmed the machine has been pushed back until November.
There aren't many details out right now, but Sony says copy protection technology related to their Blu-ray disc drive is the cause of the delay[/quote5bb90fc0bb]

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are both going to be cool. A lot of BS hype and nerd fighting are making my head hurt though...

getting a 'free' blu-ray player with your ps3 will be very cool. $425 or so is a bargain when you factor that in as long as they don't force you to buy a $200 remote to unlock the movie playing feature.

$425 is the retail? I hear it was going to be more like $800...

I read today the PS3 will retail for around $500. Considering that the first set-top Blu-Ray players will retail for near $1000, the PS3 is a bargain.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are both high capacity formats, but technologically Blu-Ray is superior. 25GB per layer instead of 15GB. Theoretically a dual-layer, double-sided Blu-Ray disc can thus hold 100GB. BR also has more of the consumer electronics industry behind it, while HD-DVD has more computer hardware/software companies behind it.
However, despite being technologically inferior, HD-DVD has a major advantage going for it. It's available today and cheaper, since it is pretty much the same technology as current DVD technology, just using a smaller blue laser than can condense more data in a given area. BR is a completely new technology that will initially be expensive due to the tooling-up required by manufacturers. It's much like the VHS vs. Betamax and OS/2 vs. Windows wars -- Betamax was a superior technology but the greater availability of VHS early on sunk it. OS/2 was a superior OS technically than Win95, but IBM couldn't market it for squat against the marketing juggernaut that is Microsoft.
