yeah it was a good episode, this is the best i've seen the show in a long time.

they always recycle the IT people, they are always the first and most often killed off

i didn't watch what happens next week, I don't like to watch those previews they spoil the whole damn show. Especially when I know i'm going to watch it regardless of what they tell me.

I'm sure it will be good though

I thought the third season was utter crap. But they have been able to rebuild the show since then to get it back on top. Even if they have a bad year, they can turn it around. And, it would be possible to set it up so the characters are strong enough to carry the show with Jack. He is less and less the focus of the show as it goes on. Instead of trying to replace him with a Jack clone (which would be a huge mistake), they should just build up the characters in the general CTU setting and off-set that with the Presidential stuff. If both sides are strong enough, the show could carry on a long time. Hell, if ER can go 12 years with a bunch of doctors in the same hospital, then 24 can do it too.

Exactly. The way the show is written it [ie9deacb497]can[/ie9deacb497] continue without Jack. Spinoffs are very possible.

OK. The episode has ended. My one friend is on suicide watch because it seems that Tony was killed. BUT - there is a theory called the "silent clock theory". If you remember last week when Edgar died the ep ended with a silent clock instead of the normal bleeps. This has happened 4 other times when important show characters have [bf36cc6dd19]actually died.[/bf36cc6dd19] However there have been similar life-in-the-balance cliffhangers before where it seems that someone is dead; they had the normal clock though and sure enough, next ep they are ok somehow. Look it up.

Yar, I don't think Tony's really dead. There was a lot of injectible goodies that they were using to make that guy talk... and if some could kill a guy, I bet there's some that can bring him back.

But seriously, count the silent clocks. Teri in S1, George Mason S2, Ryan Chapelle S4. Did Nina get one in season 3? I don't think so. Palmer didn't get one, but he bit the bullet the first few minutes of the first episode. Did Michelle get one out of her commercial? (goes to check) No she didn't, and her explosion death led right into commercial. And, most recently, good old eggy.

If I've missed any silent clocks please let me know.

I pray to the TV gods that Tony isn't dead...

He and the writers agreed it was a good idea, partly because the idea of killing three popular characters in the season opener seemed risky. "It was just so depressing that it felt overwhelming," Mr. Gordon said.

The communication between the writers and the cast hasn't always worked as well as the give-and-take with Mr. Bernard. There have been times, Mr. Gordon said, when actors have found out their characters were dying from reading the scripts, rather than being told beforehand. To remedy that mistake, Mr. Gordon has grown practiced in his, as he put it, "Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger" role.

"I think there's really nothing better on this show than a well-earned death," he said. "Which doesn't mean they're not disappointed. And sometimes a little angry."

Mr. Gordon agreed with the suggestion that reality television might have influenced the ever-shortening lives of characters on scripted television. "There is absolutely a 'Survivor'-fication of television at some level," he said. "All these shows, whether it's 'Survivor' or 'American Idol,' are always about somebody leaving the show. It's always about a symbolic death."

This season of "24" began with Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) returning from the dead after he had to disappear in the finale last May. The actual death of Jack is where Mr. Gordon said he would like the series to end, whenever that may be. "He's a tragic character, and tragedy ends in death," he said.

But for now, it is Jack's companions who are at risk. Mr. Gordon said, "The irony is that he comes back to life, and everyone around him dies."[/quote479d4a722b]

For the boat to be drifting off already at the end, the boat either MUST have been right there (was the airport even close to the ocean), or 24 took a slight departure from realtime to flash forward to Jack inside the belly of the boat.
