You don't have many options when dealing with laptops. Also, if anyone has a coupon I will give you super karma for it lol

Does it have to be a Dell?
After I sell my Plasma I'm gonna get a custom HP laptop because they seem to be really good although I'm a Laptop virgin so they may be shite.

1) dunt do celeron. it may be a laptop but u have plenty of processor choices...if it comes down to it, do amd over celeron. you can get the amd equiv of a P4 for about $150-$200 less than a P4, u dunt even want to deal with celeron lishudderli
2) dunt do dell D i work tech support and guess how many dells vs other brands we get 90%, i kid u not. other brands we recommend you stay away from are HP (sorry tsj) and compaq (although mine has been fine for about 8 months). recommended are toshiba and fujitsu (moreso the latter). as for acer/gateway/etc we havent seen too many that needed repairing and my friends that have them havent had em break.

Well that sucks.
So why are HP's bad? I really had my eye on an HP I liked the look/sound of but if they're that bad there's no point.

yeah, I second the no dell thing. i work on a helpdesk for a large computer software/hardware reseller and we have a handful of them in the field. they break the most. hp is good compared to them, but their low-end ones are built really low-end. horrible quality. the nc6220/30s are pretty nice systems but considerably higher than your price range. have you checked your local office max/staples circulars? I always see laptops for under $600. they're usually toshiba or something I've never dealt with, but still...I've always heard horrible things about celeron cpus too, never used one though. maybe that should say something about them!

im with her, dells blow, me and 2 of my friends got some around the same time, all of them have broken mine made it the longest then the hd went out, others have had 2 motherboards, new hard drives, new disk drives, dells are shitty laptops! DO NOT BUY!!! and their support blows.

I don't agree with the Celeron thing. I have one and I love it.
I also have a CompaQ and I have not had any problems with it....have had it for over a year now...still runs as good as the day I got it....
Dell-Sucks
HP-Not that great
Gateway-Sucks
I suggest a Compaq or a Toshiba. Both are quite nice...providing you don't fill them with spyware/adware etc.
liI reformat my hard drive every 2-3months to keep my computer fresh...li

I have had no problem with Dells, and have used tons. You get more Dell calls then anyone else because 90% of comp users use Dells.

I have two Dells and they aren't so bad..
kyks17
28-02-2006 20:11:36
yeah really 90% of computer users do not use dell...
and ok even if you think their product is good, forget about it if/when it breaks. their support is absolutely horrible. my friend had her dell laptop overheat, and they told her (after 3 hours on hold/talking to them) that it melted almost everything in it (even though they hadn't seen it, and it was still running so clearly not everything was melted...) so after 2 weeks they send a guy to her place (where she had to be for a 6 hour window every day since the call - aka she missed alot of class), and he brought a new hard drive...and that was it. needless to say that didnt fix the problem, they sent her a new wireless card (2 weeks to receive) and had her install it herself, which she failed at. in the end they shipped her a "new" laptop and she sent hers back, with again a nice 2 week wait. anytime she called it was at least 2 hours on the phone with them.
so consider if ud like to go through that if it breaks...
i've had bad personal experience with HP and their support, but this was back in 99. since then i havent liked them but i havent had anything of theirs so nothing to complain about.
as long as u can keep it clean in terms of spyware/adware/viruses, your only concern really need be quality of hardware. so its up to you...i know you can huck an IBM against the wall and it'll still work fine ;)

wow, i have a lot to comment on differnt parts of this thread.
about the hp and compaq thing --->
yes, i believe that HP bought Compaq a few years back. therefore, they are basically the same computer now.
amd or celeron--->
YES, if you have the opportunity, go for an AMD. i know that you have a budget, but be careful. celerons were not really created with the intent of high usage, and have been mass produced and sold to companies like dell, compaq, etc. i know you have a budget ($610, right?), but try to get an AMD if you can.
the other two things i would consider is your hd and your video card. 40gb is not much these days. find out how much extra it would be to get at least a 80 or something. unless you plan on only using it for surfing the net and writing papers, you will want more.
the 32 mb card is a little bit lacking in my perspective. once again, if you want to do more than surf and write papers, go for a 64 or even 128.
i know this might be costing you a little bit more now, but in the long run it will really help out. everything else seems fairly standard, but be sure to check out all specs before buying one. have you checked out any other laptops yet?

apple is worth the extra money if you can save up a bit more.
I had an acer laptop and it was good, i eventually broke the screen off, but it was my fault.
Dells are horrible.
compaq and hp are pretty bad
toshiba is generally good and so is acer
apple trumps all by never breaking and never crashing, and i can say all that from experience.

wait until they upgrade the ibook though. it's long in the tooth and next up for the intel upgrade. it's said to be getting a 13.3 inch widescreen too which would be nice. definitely worth the extra money too. just factoring in the iLife suite and the OS itself.
