Lately whenever i try to open some applications my computer hangs. The main ones are AIM and Internet explorer (this is just a temporary freeze which goes back to normal, then i can use them) and also Dreamweaver and photoshop (these completely lock my comp up, however its not locked all the time, it will unlock about every 20 seconds for 5 seconds). As far as i can tell its not overheating, and i dont have any adware/viruses i can find. Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT Specs
Pentium 4 2.6 ghz
1 gb ram pc3200
ATI Radeon 9600
848-P Neo-V Mobo (pretty sure on model number).

Yeah reformating sounds like the best option. Try defragging first, that might help a bit.

Should i just try reinstalling windows? I have 2 harddrives, and most of my stuff is on a different drive than the windows one, so it would be alot easier just to format the smaller one.

what i do for my windows pc is i install all my oses on one disk and store all my data on another, that way i can reinstall the os whenever i want with minimal data loss.

i had a similar problem with aim and ie. Turning off spysweeper fixed it....... not sure if that helps.. it seems that certain protection programs does this....

Re-installing Windows doesn't mean you'll lose everything on your HDD.

I just finished doing it tonight and everything is exactly as I left it.

The computer still takes 4 minutes to shut down though. (

just make sure that you are not running many programs at the same time.

[quote8d9f7330a2="cartrenroy"]just make sure that you are not running many programs at the same time.[/quote8d9f7330a2]It shouldnt be a ram issue, i could always run them before, and its not even 50% memory usage when it freezes.

You said you get a bunch of unreadable segments if you do chkdsk. Is your hard drive bad then? Or just a lot of corrupt data.
