I contacted some company that had my last name registered as a .comurl==http://=http:///url (it is not a common name). I explained that I wanted the domain so that I could put my resume and some other professional stuff up (they are only using the domain as a redirector to sign up for their web services at addressor.com).

This is the response I got

I got an initial ball park number around $1,000, but I believe it may go down to $800
or 700
I will be waiting your number in order to engage in the negotiation with a clear target.

The company is based in Rio de Janeiro, so I guess there's a little bit of a language barrier... Anyways, I may want that domain name badly, but I'm not going to pay anywhere near $700 for it. The only way I imagine it would be worth it to me is if I become a celebrity one day (not likely to happen).

Just get something similar like .neturl==http://=http:///url or something. There are a ton of extensions and you shouldn't pay that much or anywhere near that for the domain.

I wish they would make laws against cyber-squatting.

Courts have interpreted cases to forbid some instances of cybersquatting. The cybersquatting has to be conducted with a malicious intent though

are there any free sites where you can get a domain name appraised? I have one and someone has told me I may be able to resell it for more.

I can tell you exactly why people expect that much money for domains - because people will pay it. I've sold 2 domains, which I registered with the intention of using, for $500 a piece. I didn't hunt out buyers for these domains, I was contacted with the offers in both cases.

One was about a year ago and one was a few months ago and both of them are sitting unused...

Not going to happen with a fan site like that i bring in about $100-$150 and thats probably more than most blink-182 sites bring in.

whats the point of having domain names besides the 1st person putting their resumes on there and stuff, what can you do with a random domain in terms on earning $

I wouldnt pay a cent for it. Just use a .net,url==http://=http:///url or .orgurl==http://=http:///url

With a zillion domain names available dont waste your money.

I own several websites, and recently built 6 more, was going to be 7 but one of the ones got bought up 3 days before me. (Thats what i get for being lazy).

I will wait until it is avalable or go withought

noob question how can i buy a domain?

yeah, that site isn't worth 700-800 dollars. i have run across a couple of sites that won't take bids under $5,000 and want more. that really sucks, due to the fact that i had an idea already in mind for it.

why did you want that site...i mean, i know for resumes and stuff, but why does it have to be that domain name? try something else. i searched for months before i chose mine, and am always looking for new ones.

The domain was my last name, which is pretty uncommon. I had an idea to put together a small site about my brothers and myself, with our resumes, bios, accomplishments, etc. (we're all honors students with a bunch of scholarships and other crap). Anyways, I thought it would give us all a bit of an edge in whatever else we try to do with our lives.

The guy actually came down to $350, but that was still too high for me. I let him know that I wouldn't consider anything above $150 and he hasn't responded for several days now, so I guess there's no deal.

I've pretty much decided to go with either a .orgurl==http://=http:///url or a .net,url==http://=http:///url but I can't decide which one matches the point of my site more. Maybe I should go with a .us,url==http://=http:///url .nameurl==http://=http:///url or .info...url==http://=http:///url

have you tried looking for your full name? (i.e. joeschmo.com ??)

yeah, i think a .neturl==http://=http:///url or .orgurl==http://=http:///url would still be cool. too bad he is being a jerk about it though
