I figure we have random music related threads popping up left and right so why not have an offical thread, where we can talk about bands we like, ask for torrent invites...etc
Anyhow I just downloaded the new Neko Case album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. I am a huge neko fan, and love everything the new pornographers do.
Also I have quickly been falling in love with Ray LaMontagne's Trouble.
Check it out, definatly worth a download. Acoustic, very soulfull. Reminds me of M. Ward or damien rice I suppose.
Last the lineups for Bonnarro and Choachilla were both released recently. Anyone planning on attending these?
also I found a cool podcast in KRCW Morning Becomes eclectic. It is of the live in studio performance they have each day. Lots of cool new up and coming artists(like the arctic monkeys)

Pokernerd -I still listen and love home and animosity, the last two albums have been horendous in my opinion though. I saw sevendust on tour with animosity a couple years back, it was great we got moved up in front on the pit against the stage, got the MIC in our face during Rumble Fish, and then Vanilla Ice came by and sat next to us, and lit up a J during angles son.
It's a strange sensation meeting a celebrity of Vanilla Ice's calibur. A sensation of hate and excitment all a once

in response to keane I saw them in concert at ACL this year....
the most self-aborbed, over dramatic band i've seen in ages. I kinda liked their CD going in, but they did everything they could to make me hate them. The lead singer told a story before every song, and did a bow and a lot of "thank you, thank you, you are the best crowd ever" ' s after EVERY song.
anyhow they went from alright in my book to a bunch of jokers

I'm into a lot of rock/alternative stuff... 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park, Yellowcard, etc, but I really like Christian rock bands like Pillar, Kutless, Chevelle, and 12 Stones.
I'm a guitar player and I'm into a lot of the lead-playing stuff, so I listen to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci a lot.
Are there any other big Pillar fans here? I love their new album - The Reckoning.

Blah. All of you. Though I listen to every kind of music, I mainly listen to hip-hop.

Breaking Benjamin's "Rain" is a great song imo. Kinda sorta similar bands (or just bands i like )) would include Crossfade, A Perfect Circle, Anberlin, Muse, and to a much lesser extent Three Doors Down.

the velvet teen is a band that I like...
See I like the type of music that makes you think, both lyrically and muscially. Stuff that's deep, or deeper.. and musical melodies that have to be listened to more than once.
Don't get me wrong, I love the shallow stuff too, but, it's all about the deep stuff.

I may be way off base, but I was thinking you may be interested in "30 Seconds to Mars" (album A Beautiful Lie). Though it's completely different, it reminds me of Chevelle in a few ways and an interesting little bit of info, the lead singer is that guy from "Requiem for a Dream," the guy who had his arm amputated from infection. He's played in a ton of other movies, but apparently wants to be a musician. It's pretty good.
... and I'm not sure how many metal fans browse this forum, but I don't hear much about "Ligeia." Their debut album was just released a few months ago and it is some of the best metal I've heard in a LONG time. It doesn't sound like everything that's being spit out now. I don't know how to compare it to other bands, but it's got more screaming than singing (and a good deep scream at that) and the singing is a (pardon such a homo adjective) manlier singing, not like a lot of the screamo stuff that's been released lately where the singing is really high pitched and boyish sounding (though I listen to a lot of screamo so I'm not complaining). If this sounds like something you may be interested in, just download the first track of the CD, "Beyond a Doubt." It's one of the best songs...

Also like Amadan, it's the only band I know of that has a didggeridoo. Belle and Sebastian are pretty good and of course the classics, Pink Floyd, LZ, Ozzy, Jimi, Misfits.

The new Interpol album "Our Love To Admire" leaked to OiNK last night. I was going to buy it anyway, but after listening to it, I'm really excited to own a copy.
This album is fucking fantastic, definitely worth the 3 year wait. The opener "Pioneer to the Falls" is possibly one of the best songs I have ever heard. Maybe I'll go see them in concert again..they are coming to Grand Rapids.

Holy crap, Beirut fucking rock. Nothing like I expected and completely amazing.
Rilo Kiley Didn't think much of the new album
Joe Purdy If you're into softer, melodic indie/folk this guy's tight.
The Go! Team New album is decent, but not as good as their previous one.
Christopher O'Riley Really fucking good. He does piano arrangement of alternative artists such as Elliot Smith and Radiohead. No singing, just piano.
Elvis Perkins Comes doylnea recommended, so you know there has to be at least one good song on it. It actually has at least 8.

The last few weeks have brought schedule changes to ACL Fest and they've added Dr. Dog, St. Vincent, Cold War Kids, Common, and Grizzly Bear to fill in.
All really good additions to a lineup that was missing some good independent artists through the middle, and now I go in just 2 days.

J4, if you're into some slower Tool songs, definitely listen to 10,000 Days (Wings Pt.2). It's probably one of the most overlooked songs on the new album. I used to just skip over it since it has such a long build-up, but the climax of the song is really worth it. It's easily one of my favorite songs on the album. Part of the reason is that I d/l'ed the lyrics (very beautiful for Tool), which really open up that song.
In fact, I'm going to listen to it now wink

I love songs that are calm then explode all of the sudden. I love how in Parabol it goes "This body makes me feel eternal. Alright I got Aenima and 10,000 days. I have a few other songs from other albums such as a few songs from Undertow. So far my favorite Tool song is definitely Aenema. My favorite album so far would probably be Aenima. Stinkfist, Eulogy, Forty Six and 2, Ćnema, and Third Eye are all incredible songs off of that album. I haven't listened to too much 10,000 days yet but so far I really like Vicarious and The Pot. Oh and Asajax, I listened to 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2), and I got a little impatient and skipped through it a little bit. lol I think the song needs to grow on me.
So anyway, what's your favorite Tool song (directed at anyone who likes Tool)? Like I said before, mines definitely Aenema. It blends such hard rocking parts with beautiful soft parts. Learn to swim.

So yeah I went to that Chevelle concert that I was talking about. It was awesome. I was in the very front center right behind a guy leaning on the fence thing. When Chevelle finally came on stage they played their first song of their new album called "Antisaint" everyone rushed forward and I got smashed between like 4 big guys on all sides and it was seriously suffocating me. The security guys had to pull some of the people in the front row out because they were about to pass out. I held in there but eventually I got pushed back pretty far.
Anyway, it was awesome but very violent. I have scratches all over my neck and etc but that's probably because I went into the mosh pit a lot. lol

But about 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie Pt. 2), yeah, it does need to grow on you. Same with Jambi and Rosetta Stoned. No doubt, the latter rocks my balls off every time I listen to it D -- the lyrics from the climax of that song are in my sig.

Dan Layus is the lead singer and front man from this band (which has been making there way up in the industry pretty quickly. I actually lived across the hall from him in college back in '03 in Greenville.

The lyrics to these Tool songs go so deep... it's crazy. They blend the sound, the vocals, and the lyrics together so well. I've listened to this song over and over and over and over and over... and over again. Lateralus is an AMAZING album. I rearranged the track order according to the Fibonacci sequence because apparently the tracks fit together when you do that. And while on the subject of the Fibonacci numbers, their song called "Lateralus" is also amazing. I can't believe they would go as far as to blend that mathematical sequence in with their song.

yo hurt is maybe the most underrated band ever.
If you have time to listen through a whole cd at a sitting, it's like, "wow, that's really impressive"
not as much as tool, obviously, cuz they are completely insane (as we've discussed), but hurt is really really good. And you will not be disappointed with volume 1 either, it's just as good as volume 2 D

I was reading an interview with the lead singer, (can't think of his name off the top of my head,) but he said, although he plans to continue with the band, the possibility of a volume 3 is 0%. He's done bitching about his life and all the crap that's happened to him and now he wants to move on and change directions a bit.
But with the anger he has, how far of a different direction can he really end up taking??

i may be a jackass, but i have no idea what "make a last.fm." means hahaha.... oops oops oops
and you know, I want to say Volume II, cuz it's harder and it has Ten Ton Brick which is their best song, but Volume I may just be dead even with it. I guess for all intents and purposes I'll say Volume II, but Vol. I may take over soon enough.

I got it. I really like "Falls Apart" a lot.
Anyway, you guys should check out Chevelle (I'm sure you've heard their popular stuff but their earlier stuff is really good). The lead singer does a great job of blending soft and hard vocals. I've been a fan of theirs for a while now. I really don't like their newest album though.
"Point #1" is still one of my favorite songs to this day. Enough already.
"Does everybody know what time it is?"
"TOOL TIME!"
"That's right! Binford Tools is proud to present Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor!"
"Binford Tools is proud to present 'Tool Time'!"
Okkervil River, The Whigs, The National, The Dykeenies, Vampire Weekend and Klaxons are all full of win.
It would take a person who knows absolutely nothing about music to say that Tool is overrated. I'm not saying that as a fan either. I'm saying that as a music enthusiast. They do things that no one else does. They play with pinpoint accuracy in situations where that is damn near impossible to do.
J4 and I discussed this at length one day and the things that are going on in their music without you even knowing are insane. They based a whole album on the goddamn Fibonacci Sequence for God's sake. You try making a rhythm that follows that.
They could receive all the credit in the world and still not be overrated. They are musical geniuses and that is not an overstatement by any means.
J4320

2. Disgustipated

6. Faaip De Oiad

Chevelle man, they're a good band. I've never heard a band stick with 6/8 timing for the most part and have it always sound good. I'll tell you what, for a three man band, they have a really heavy, badass sound.
His vocal style is strange though, it's always like two words, pause, two words, pause, two words pause.
Newest cd is a bit more evolved though, everyone criticizes it but I think it's fantastic.

Rly? Vena Sera is my least favorite album of theirs. I saw them live and the ones I enjoyed the most were the older ones like SMA, Comfortable Liar, Send the Pain Below, and etc. I wish they would have played more from the first album. There was a point when it came to the last song and he asked, "Should we play a newer song or an older one?" Everyone was like, "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111" lol
Oh and his voice was really weird. It was a lot higher than usual and when he talked he almost had that "gay voice" sound (not to stereotype but you know what I mean). It was weird and not what he sounds like on live videos on Youtube and etc.Lay off the helium before your concerts. evil

when I said evolved, I meant that they've gotten off the broken vocals and 6/8 time a bit. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but evolved nonetheless. and you're right, I definitely like This Type of Thinking and WWN way better, specifically TToT, but unlike everyone else I didn't hate the Senior album.
That's strange about his voice, I never would have expected him to have a..... um, "gay voice" as you so eloquently put it D D D He doesn't sound particularly manly, but he sings like a guy with a normal guy voice haha. Wow, you're right, lay off the HE, bro.
I think when Joe, the third brother/bassist quit, they lost some sort of "togetherness" and their sound changed accordingly. They don't seem to have it together as much as unique, thick, hearty sound is concerned, despite their evolution to a more "popular" sound. I do like the new album nonetheless, but definitely prefer the middle two.
I'm going to amazon the first one right now haha.
we've taken over this thread haha

P.S.
My buddy's working in my area at work and he brings his iPod in everyday for us to listen to and he downloaded some Tool for me, (legally of course roll) and I laughed because his selection was something that you would pick out, what with the Third Eye and Harry Manbacks of the world.
There was no fan favorites like Aenima or Sober on that mix hahaha.

Another complaint I have about Vena Sera is, it sounds way too studio produced and made for the radio. That album is just a compilation of songs that didn't make it to the other albums so they just threw them in to fulfill their contract (no, I'm not making that up). It definitely lacks emotion and etc.
Anyway, as for your PS post ----
Third Eye isn't a filler track (last track on Aenema). It's pretty long but it's good, especially the end. PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE
Harry Manback is just weird. I don't know why he would want to share the rantings of some immigrant over some real music. Why'd he download Tool for you? I thought you already had it all. Tomorrow I'm gonna run to the store and pick up 1 or 2 albums (and eventually get them all) just because I feel they definitely deserve my money (even the shitty small percent of it that isn't taken from the label | ) with all of the musical enjoyment they've given me. They are definitely my favorite artist for sure and I can't wait for their next album. )

yeah dude, you know what's fucked up? when I say "evolved" that is ultimately what I meant. =turned into a studio band. Sad, eh? Originality is dead. Yes, I do have all the Tool, but since we only listen to his iPod all day, he downloaded some to his iPod cuz he knows I like it. I wasn't suggesting Third Eye was a filler track, (even if I said that) I really just meant that it is one of those kind of odd tracks/songs that you don't expect to hear on a playlist haha. plus it's 15 minutes long. And maynard has come out and said that it won't be five years between albums this time. You know, at first, I wasn't all that impressed with this new album, having waited five years for it, however, after all of our discussions and finding that weird combo track, I have a total new respect for the amount of time that must have actually gone into that.
They are my favorite artists too and I wish more people that wouldn't think to listen to them would give them a shot and try to understand some of the crazy shit that is actually going on in the music. It's unfortunate if you don't play an instrument or have musical knowledge because you really really miss out on a lot of stuff by them if you don't.

Yeah I'm a Tool missionary. I'm trying to get a friend into Tool (different one than the one mentioned earlier) but he's Christian and he doesn't like how Tool is anti-religion and all. I got him to agree to listen to some tracks. Here's what he's getting --
- Disposition
- Parabol
- Parabola
- Reflection
- Stinkfist
- H.
- Right In Two
- No Quarter (cover)
- No Quarter (orginal Led Zeppelin version)
- Pushit
- Intolerance
He doesn't like stuff that's too hard-rocking so I kind had to get make it less "wild."
And... I forever thank tylerc for getting me into Tool. I had a few songs of theirs before like Prison Sex and etc but tylerc sent me a bunch that really got me into them. D

Very random and strange. I wish it was its own track instead of being at the end of Opiate though because I listen to Opiate a lot and I don't like the annoying silence at the end. I'd rather have it just go to a different song once it's over.

If you're going to cover it, you need to know your shit. Opiate, fine, maybe not so much, as this is before they started going all crazy with their timings and instrumental prowess and it's a bit easier to cover, but if you're going to do it, you HAVE to do it right.

I'm of the belief that music and dance are two ways to which you can connect to your soul and that each piece of music, however terrible or beautiful it may be, is a part of the creator's soul.
You ever just shut your eyes and dance, going wherever the music takes you or doing whatever you feel like? That's what I'm looking for all the time, whether it's Swedish Death Metal or Iron & Wine.

Vol. II = Teh shit -- I'll admit I haven't listened in a while.
It's too bad Hurt isn't planning on doing another album. At least not as "Hurt" o
Right now I'm in a The Mars Volta mood. Amputechture is awesome. Bedlam in Goliath is still my favorite though. They were pretty hard to get into, but they blow me away.
I've also discovered "dredg" recently. Good stuff. Check out their album "Catch Without Arms."

The Mars Volta are now my favorite band of all time. I've been on a binge for the past couple months. Yes, they are sometimes hard to get into, but holy shit is it worth it. My opinion of albums
Amputechture > Frances the Mute > The Bedlam in Goliath > De-Loused in the Comatorium
Although Amputechture and Frances the Mute are very close.
Ouroboros is my favorite TMV song. Cassandra Gemini is just epic.

"With two full-lengths under his belt, Astronautalis has been busy crafting his careful balance between hip-hop, country, and American indie rock. Hand picking members from The Polyphonic Spree, Midlake, and The Paperchase, he composed this indescribably diverse album under the guidance of Grammy nominated producer and engineer John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, The Polyphonic Spree, Modest Mouse). Pomegranate plays out like a collection of short stories, each song as varied in style and sound as they are in subject and character. Astronautalis's pop sensibility manages to weave catchy melodic strains that'll haunt you for days."
Department of Eagles (Grizzly Bear side project) - In Ear Park
Ever since watching Donnie Darko the song has been repeating in my head... and I don't mind it.

I feel so left out of this thread... most of the bands mentioned on this page alone I've never even heard of (
So, I'll throw you guys a curve ball. Give this a listen. Pretty funny. (I've actually grown to like these guys and even bought the CD. Their story's rather interesting. It's another one of those bands that developed a fanbase on MySpace/YouTube and got picked up by a record label. They were just a couple of guys with MacBook Pros and some recording hardware.)

I think I'm the minority here and likely wasting my time posting this, but if any of you are into heavier stuff, for the love of god, check out "Farewell to Freeway." I was absolutely horrified when I went in search of a torrent for their albums and discovered that the ONLY thing I could find was a 256kbps mp3 rip of their latest album (I have the majority of my stuff in lossless) and I couldn't even find that at a public tracker. What.cd and waffles.fm were the only sites I could find the torrent. So I bought both CDs myself looking forward to the ratio boost and GOD DAMN if when I got 'em in the mail, I see someone has already uploaded both CDs in every format allowed. ( ... and I'm also finding the CDs on public trackers now too. Of course, I'm still happy to have purchased the CDs.
Considering how hard it was to find their music illegally, I'm gonna have to assume they are extremely underated and in need of proper exposure. Anyway, this would probably have to be my favorite track on their latest album.
