I have no idea about what to look for in Flat Panel/LCD monitors so I'm hoping someone can tell me which of these is the best one

[quote0846e8837d]Acer AL1912 19
Samsung 711T 17
ViewSonic VX715 17
Sony SDM-S73 17
Dell 1704FPT 17
NEC LCD92V-BK 19
BenQ FP931 19
HP Pavilion F1903 19[/quote0846e8837d]

I wouldn't mind a 19" but I'd prefer quality over quantity.

reviews are generally the best place to look, becasue you cannot trust any of the manufacturer specs on brightness, contrast, etc.

What to look for is

DVI Input (and analog if need be)
Ajustments (swivel, up/down)

A good place to research is amazon.com, becasue they have virtually every monitor, and almost all have reviews.

Also, remember that many monitors will have the same hardware, but different names.

Of the brands you listed, Samsung is known as the industry leader, but alas, there isnt a 19" model there. In addition, the NEC stands out, jsut becasue they are a larger portion of the market.

I own the Acer1914, not quite sure what the difference is between that and the 1912, but probably jsut an older generation. The Acer is a very solid performer.

As nice as they are, I cant see spending enough money for a 19" on a 17", but then again, Im not a big gamer.

I own the Sony from freepay, i must say even without "awsome" specs the image is truely amazing.

True, i almost bought it before, but couldnt. Mines a 25ms response rate, good enough for CnC Generals and a little bit of CS. DVDs are only ok. You probably want a 16MS response rate for general use though. 25MS is a bit high.

25ms is a bit high. samsung makes dell monitors and shares the same plant as sony i think. some of hp's lcd's are made by sharp, the leading manufacturer in lcd.

in that case, go with the dell. from what you posted the sony doesn't even have dvi. any display without dvi is obsolete and should not be considered.

some of the companies test their panels in different ways so the results don't match up apples to apples on occasion. googling each of them and comparing user results is the best. from everything i've heard, the dell monitor is pretty bright and vibrant and offers a fast enough response time to not ghost in fps games.

I'm thinking of going with the 19" Dell thats on the TRainn site.

We have teh 17" ones at school and i love the features.

Either Dell, or the LG moni. Both 19"

Definately wont get 17".

Actually someone on this forum got the 19" Dell and is returning it because the colours are washed out at the top of the screen. Apparently it's the same on all models but Dell only offer support if you buy it with a computer and not just on its own.
