New BBC show...
http//www.tv.com/life-on-mars/show/51334/summary.html
[quote7912123bab="TV.com"]A detective chief inspector from 2006 is investigating a serial killer when he is knocked over by a speeding car. Waking up, he finds himself mysteriously transported back in time to 1973. Initially struggling to come to terms with his situation, he has to come to terms with the old-fashioned technology and attitude of the day, while figuring out how he came to be trapped in the past.

The actor John Simm described the show as "a cross between Back to the Future and The Sweeney", and it makes effective use of the disorientation of the unwitting time traveller while taking a post-modern romp through 1970s fashions and technologies, with due tribute paid to the classic police dramas of the day to fashion a truly unique programme.[/quote7912123bab]

It sounds wierd but its actually good. Grab it off torrent sites or usenet. 4 episodes so far...

It's no surprise the BBC is trying to capitalize on the return of Doctor Who by developing new sci-fi shows. There's another one called Torchwood that's coming too.

They're all worth a look.

Wolfeman

04-02-2006 11:18:29

Its not really Sci-Fi. If you've seen the first 2 episodes its pretty obvious why he's back in the 70s. Still entertaining...

Its really just my BBC filler until Hustle starts series 3. Sometimes I wish I lived in London (

Tholek

04-02-2006 11:34:50

Well, "time travel" smacks of sci-fi to me, at least in theme, but I know what you mean. )

What's your opinion of the new DW?

Hustle started showing on A&E in the states just last month. Its funny because they call it a new original show.

Yeah I've noticed a few channels do that. I think they did it with What Not To Wear, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Weakest Link and maybe The Office too.

I think I've seen Hustle actually, looks and sounds familiar. I'll have a look on Usenet for that.

Also, if you're into some BBC shows, John Simm (Life On Mars) was in a government conspiracy show on the BBC about 2-3 years ago called State Of Play. It was really good.

This goes without saying these days. (

Feel lucky that some unadulterated UK programming makes it here at all. Remember that most stuff was adapted by US networks for decades. The Office and Coupling are examples of that still going on.

What's worse is how they redub the kids stuff like Bob The Builder with American voices, even though the British accents are clearly intelligible. That's sorta insulting.

It does no good to have American kids raised to believe everything good only comes from America.

I agree completely. My wife couldn't believe how many shows that are over here, that we had in the UK first. She was led to believe that it's all from here, especially with things like Bob The Builder where the voices are different, who the fuck is going to know? It's a shame, especially when it's the Uk taxpayers who fund the BBC and make all of these programmes possible. Credit where credit is due.

I know Wolfeman likes the US version of The Office, but I honestly couldn't watch more than 10 minutes of it, same with Coupling, they just didn't work for me. shrug

As for Doctor Who, I've never liked it and only watched maybe 6 times in my life so no, I haven't seen the new one. (

Wolfeman

04-02-2006 16:06:12

The Office US is good. Its really true to the BBC one in the flow and stories. Ricky Gervais is still involved with the show too. I think the biggest hurdle is getting over the characters being different. The US cast is all great, only missing Gervais but Carrell is a close 2nd. I swear its the best comedy on US TV. And US Dawn/Pam is way hotter...

http/" alt=""/img460.imageshack.us/img="460/246/jennafischer75cg.jpg[" alt=""/imgc872aab019] [size=18c872aab019][bc872aab019]>[/bc872aab019] [/sizec872aab019][img="c872aab019]http/" alt=""/img142.imageshack.us/img="142/3449/031223theofficedawnatdesk6me.jpg[" alt=""/imgc872aab019]

theysayjump

I much prefer the UK Dawn to the US Pam.

I think the main thing I didn't like about the US version of The Office is that it just doesn't feel real. The UK version feels like a documentary but the US version feels too scripted.

To each his own. shrug

KeithA

04-02-2006 16:43:41

The earliest episodes of the US version of The Office were shot-for-shot remakes of the original U.K. episodes. Watching them was like watching a cover band.

The most recent episodes are pretty good though. I really was biased against the US version at first, but I'm coming around.

I tried to give the BBC version of Coupling a chance, but it didn't stick. Props to the BBC in general though...

Speaking of which, I'd like to know where the fuck the people got their copies of 24 that I downloaded. The new Doctor Who is [bca5936cad2]miles[/bca5936cad2] away from any of the old series. You really ought to give it a shot.

Billie Piper isn't too bad to look at either...

I actually like the US version of The Office, but it's so different, I feel the title should've been changed. The UK series has done ok here in the US, but it probably could've done better had there been no confusion.

The same goes for Coupling, which was yanked from PBS pretty quickly once NBC started broadcasting their version. (Which was total crap)

When I was downloading Series 4 of 24, I started reading the comments on NewzBin about Series 5 and they were saying that Series 4 was a bit far-fetched or over the top, but Series 5 is showing some promise.

I started series 2 last night. Also, all the bad "guys" use Windows based PC/Laptops while the good "guys" use Mac. That Michelle woman is using a Dell laptop so she will be bad. Same with Nina, Jayme and the other twats.
