[quotef75a52eb2b="Slashdot"]Japanese car manufacturer Honda has launched a new self-driven car[=http//robots.engadget.com/2006/01/30/honda-accord-adas-auto-pilot-system-takes-the-reins/]a new self-driven car. Dubbed Honda Accord ADAS, the vehicle can change gears and steer itself around bends. While the auto-pilot function will currently only operate on motorways and dual carriageways, officials at Honda believe that future ADAS models will tackle all roads.[/quotef75a52eb2b]

[quotef75a52eb2b="Newfactor Mag"][bf75a52eb2b]The driver presets the cruise control at whatever speed he or she thinks appropriate -- at 70 miles per hour, for example. "If a car pulls into the space in front of the ADAS car, the cruise control will slow the car down," said Graham Avent, a spokesperson for Honda UK. The car also can steer itself around bends in the road. [/bf75a52eb2b][/quotef75a52eb2b]

they've been working on technologies like this for years...and not just honda a lot of independent companies too.

what's the name of the thing the government does every year where a car has to be completely self-steering and go through like 150 miles of offroad terrain and whatever team builds a car that crosses the finish line the fastest wins like $50,000? i heard about it last year and a volkswagon toureg won last year

well yea, but it's finally going to be sold to consumers.

Hmm the first thing I thought of was Minority Report. Then I, Robot makes more sense. Cool stuff.

I don't think I'd trust my car to make turns for me but its a cool idea

I've been waiting for this since I was ten. And nobody listened to me then.

So far every time I come up with a barely-feasable notion (this idea being the most feasible of them) and someone tells me I'm wrong, I turn out to be right a few years later. But by then it's too late to gloat; they've usually forgotten or don't care. evil

this is gonna be awesome. i bet in the future the majority of the cars on the road will hav technology like this and there will be far less car accidents....

its the 21st century, its about time we see some major amazing tech advances...

it doesn't necessarily make TURNS, it just watches the road and drives in the lanes primarily on highways and freeways.

it isn't meant to replace the driver. it says that it beeps every 10 secs to make sure the driver is still there. that would get annoying.

Yeah, hearing a beep every 10 seconds would drive me insane.

I think people could figure a way to disable that beep... It's not even worth mentioning. I don't like the concept very much though - American and Japanese companies just need to find a way to compete with their new Chinese rivals. This isn't the way.

This is still pretty sick though, think of all the times you cant pay attention to the road because your trying to do something else. Personally i think i would stop alot of accidents, like an autopilot.

Yep, we get to see it. Fuck MP3s replacing CDs replacing tapes replacing LPs, we're going to see some shit that will boggle our fucking brains.
