I know that occasionally something is lost in the mail.
I have two questions
1) Where do you suppose lost mail goes to? I mean it's there somewhere, but what happens to it?
2) I bought something from the UK and it's been two (2) weeks since it's been shipped. Am I SOL? Is the package probably lost? The seller says that she'll refund me if I don't get it.

did u get tracking
ive heard stories of people losing packages or mail than like yrs later it getting delivered to them cause it magically got found.
packages get lost when employees take them or if they are skipped over when scanning thru and than that mailroom has no clue its there till some observant worker notices a package which isnt registered there.

2 weeks is still fine. Just give it a little more time. Just from recent experience, it can take as long as 6 weeks.
You only get tracking when you ship by places like fedex/ups/dhl. I don't think it's offered when you ship internationally by the royal post.

You can get tracking with the USPS too, and I'm sure the royal post offers it as well.

I'm pretty sure all the lost mail i've had is sitting in some sticky-fingered postal employee's living room

Internationally for regular mail? I don't think so.

You should wait more than 2 weeks before considering a package lost. I used to wait 3 weeks for CDs ordered from an Irish company.
