I personally think these have been a complete joke, moreso since Bush has been in and the applause after every sentence. What'ya think he'll promise/change this time?

Personally my concern is the way security is being handled with illegal taps and whatnot.

In a newspaper I just read, the big topics are to be
-Energy
-War on Terror
-Security
-Healthcare

I don't think the government tapping phone lines is an issue. Who cares if they hear your conversation? I'm sure if you were planning to rob a store etc... They still wouldn't come after you. They tap the phone lines in hopes of stopping potential terrorists.

unless he brings up a plan to spend billions of dollars on ethanol, i could care less.

I was just listening to a thing about that on the radio. They said that ethanol production would max-out once it replaces 15% of our oil use. That would be nice to have, but it will never replace fossil fuels.

America is addicted to oil.

I am addicted to bananas.

That is because I am a monkey.

I can't believe they write this speech for me!

Don't say that!

Only say the things related to the speech!

No Mr. President, you're only supposed to repeat from the speaker in your ear what is related to the speech.

I watch it because it's funny. Although if they prohibited pointless clapping, it would cut it down to about 3 hours as opposed to 19 hours.

I wonder how many times he'll mention 9-11 this time. I'll go for 5.

Even if you don't feel like this is a big deal, remember the if you give a mouse a cookie story, next they'll have closed circuit tv in every public place watching you (ala Great Britain), then they'll be going through your mail and email, why stop there, they could start monitoring your excrement to determine if you are using illegal drugs... how about a camera inside your home or a mandatory pledge.

If we're the flagship of peace and prosperity
We're taking on water and about to fuckin' sink
No one seems to notice, no one even blinks
The crew all left the passengers to die under the sea

Countdown, to the very end,
Equality, an invitation that we wont extend
Ready aim, pull the trigger now,
in time you firmly secure your place in hell

State of the union address,
reads war torn country still a mess
the words power, death, and distorted truth
are read between the lines of the red, white, and blue

Your place in hell

'Guilty' is what our graves will read,
no years, no family, we did
nothing to stop the murder of
a people just like us

We need to have refs at these types of events to make sure this sort of thing stops.

Considering that oil from the mideast makes up only 1/5 of American oil imports, it doesn't seem too tough. This equates to a shift of only 15% of our total imports from mideast sources in 20 years, presumably to our biggest sources (believe it or not, Canada and Mexico).

see i just hate this shit cuz as much as i like Bush...all it ever is is saying one thing and doing another. The price of oil has nowhere to go but up. There is only a finite supply of it left and once the supply tightens up, the prices will skyrocket. The beginning of that phenomenon is already upon us.

The US should follow Sweden's lead

good luck.... roll

we use more oil than any other country...but i think that the answer is not to just ship it from other places...it's to use the ammount of oil we have and use it smarter. do you know how much diesel fuel America goes through just on transporting crago across the country every day? tons...let's say the effeciency of every singe 18 wheeler tractor trailer went up by 10% in the next week...do you have any idea how many thousands of gallons of fuel that would save each year???

that's Americas solution...not higher fuel prices or newer oil sites.

one more thing oil prices are going up...but what do you expect the average person to do about it? just STOP using oil and other natural gas? we're so addicted to it right now...the price could go up another $1 per gallon and we can't do a thing about it...cuz we need the gas

Blame Reagan for gutting fuel efficiency standards in the 80s and ushering in the age of the SUV.

If the rail system were upgraded and expanded, we could minimize the need for trucks significantly and hence, the need for the amount of diesel. Biodiesel is also an option to shrink demand for oil...

There are technologies out there that could eliminate the need for fossil fuels altogether. For example, you can build a house that does not require a furnace or an air conditioner if you build it right. Think about how much energy that would save....the demand for heating oil would plummet.

http//natcap.org[]http//natcap.org

Has examples of technologies such as the one mentioned above.

People won't stop using oil. I never said it had to stop now. However, if another country (part of whose population lives above the Arctic Circle) can set a goal such as the one I mentioned, then why can't the US? To rid oneself of the addiction to oil, one has to make the steps necessary to achieve the goal. I don't see the steps being taken in the US right now.

There are plenty of methods with which to accomplish this. REAL tax incentives for people to use different technologies and subsidies to companies who produce and market these technologies are examples of ways to encourage companies to develop new technologies instead of just doing the same old thing.

There are ways to effect change.
