What do you do online? All I do is surf the web, IM, and check e-mail, so I'd be inclined to just take the cheapest Cable option
I plan on doing some gaming (now and then [i'm not an addict]) and surf the web, and use a PC as a PBX.
Also, with Satellite..
[quote3b9f7f8cbb]What kind of PING times can I expect with satellite ? Older 1-Way systems average pings in the 450-600ms range, while 2-way systems average in the 650-1150ms range, with about an 800ms typical ping.[/quote3b9f7f8cbb]
[quote3b9f7f8cbb]Is there anything I can do to reduce latency ? Short of moving to a space-station ? No. -) The added latency / high ping times with satellite internet are due to the distance between your system and the satellite in space. Even at the speed of light (3x108 meters per second) it takes around 0.23923 seconds (or 240ms) for data to go up to the satellite and back down to Earth. Double that time for a 2-Way connection, then add a few milliseconds for your data to be retrieved from the internet by the NOC, and there you are .. in the 800ms range.[/quote3b9f7f8cbb]
[quote3b9f7f8cbb]Hughes employs a system known as the "Fair Access Policy" (or better known simply as the "FAP") to regulate the download capabilities of it's DirecWay subscribers. As such, Hughes does not go out of their way to let it's DirecWay subscribers know about the existence or details of this Fair Access Policy.[/quote3b9f7f8cbb]

Just because I have money doesn't mean it doesn't have to go towards anything.. It also has to pay my bills (satellite TV will be $70.. with NFL sunday ticket for next year, its an additional $209). I'm also buying a DLP projector and a flat-screen HDTV, a new car and a new truck, a rifle, a handgun, the list goes on.

Wait, lets go back over how you're getting all this "free money."
I didn't get free money.. I had money left over from selling my house here in Seattle and buying a house in Alaska.

i'd just get the faster of the two cable...best bang for the buck. ya satalite would be faster..but who needs that kinda speed cept for downloading large amounts of shit and it cost $600 to install. who want to pay that?

just cause of the caps they have out of the 48, i'd say get the sat.
The problem with satellite is the ping will always be 800ms+ and you're limitied to 350mb/hour (if you go over 350mb, you are down to dial-up speed and it takes 8 hours to get full speed again)
crazyates
29-01-2006 19:36:04
ya see? i'd still go w/ cable
350 mb...that's not a lot...maybe a couple tv shows and then you gotta wait an hour b4 you can download something else...that sucks

^^ ya 8 hours...that's what i mean oops
8 hours is even worse...and then you're stuck w/ crap for like a whole day!
once again...just go w/ the cable...you won't regret it compared w/ the satalite
Looks like Cable is the best choice.. 512K is a must if I go that route.

I would never get cable, because with cable you are sharing your connection with your neighbors (basically) while with DSL, it's your own private connection

Satelite is the worst internet you can get if you want to even attempt to play games...
Cable with the highest speeds would be your best choice, all of them speeds are horrible, I feel for ya...
Cable or dsl if you want to game. I've been using comcast for about 6 years, its a little more than dsl but entirely worth it. I pay $60/m for average of... 4500kbps down / 350kbps up.
You may also want to check out verizonfios, that may be my next option whenever they decide to come to the bay. Fiber optics... "Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps $44.95 - $49.95"

satellite looks too damned expensive. I couldn't ever justify paying that much for the internet. If you are going to have all these Myth TV boxs, and directv then it sounds like you won't really need to download that much anyway.
id go with cable or dsl

With that kind of money, isn't there some way you could get a business level connection (T1+)?
