What kind of motherboard and RAM do you guys recommend? Also, recommendations on a video card (NVIDIA preferrably) for my HDTV.

Sorry, I forgot to add the CPU. that was the one I had in mind. Any suggestions on video cards for an HDTV?, I'm gonna have MythTV installed and set up an Asterisk.

Also, RAM would be good. I'm thinking Corsair.

JOSHBOX

27-01-2006 22:33:39

3800+ x2 chip is somewhat high end and you wouldnt be doing it any justice putting it on that 90$ motherboard. Go with the asus sli-deluxe premium. One of the best mobos available.

h3x

27-01-2006 22:42:11

Aurelius

27-01-2006 22:56:46

he doesn't need sli.. one graphics card is plenty enough for him. graphics card depends on your budget and what you use it for. if you play games then obviously you should get a decent one but for just normal stuff like watching tv you can get a cheap one around 100 dollars $200 dollars - go for an evga 6800gs, $150 - go for evga 6600gt (you can get this for 120 sometimes)

get ocz value ram (512 x 2 or 1gb x 2)

for a motherboard get an abit nforce4 ultra one.

i'll post up some links as soon as i find some good prices. )

h3x

27-01-2006 23:01:48

I plan on using this rig to do everything.. play games, use it as a pvr and a pbx system, all displayed on an HDTV.

JOSHBOX

27-01-2006 23:08:50

lots of ppl use the sli deluxe mobo without utilizing sli just for the face that its one of the best mobos on the market. 2x1gb memory would be great too.

Wolfeman

27-01-2006 23:09:59

Yeah SLI board isn't needed. I like Asus so I'm sticking with the board I sugestted.

This RAM is good. I like Corsair...

xigxag

27-01-2006 23:31:29

i knox you said nvidia, but why not get a All-in-wonder to help with the multimedia stuff. You can get the 2006 edition[=http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102581&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=14-102-581]2006 edition for less than $200.

Or if you wanna do it up right, and be setup for any new games that come out as well as benefits of the all in wonder, get the AIW 1800, will cost ya tho.

Aurelius

27-01-2006 23:34:20

it's agp. his mobo is gonna be pci-e. i was thikning x800 aiw too but then i remebered tehre's no pci-e version of it

xigxag

27-01-2006 23:39:16

surely there is a pci-e version of AIW 2006 edition or 1800, lemme look

edit yea here ya go, only $2 more heh[=http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102661&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=14-102-661]heh

the 2006 edition is the same as the ATI x1300 with AIW features

the 1800 is a MONSTER tho

Aurelius

27-01-2006 23:44:56

x800 isnt' 1800.. if h3x is filthy rich he can get himself a x1900xt for 500+ bucks.. and the thign about AIW cards is that they don't have an hdtv tuner.

Aurelius

28-01-2006 00:05:05

you think you can build a water-cooling system and get it to work right? because if you have the money and plan on overclocking.. it's worth it for the boost in performance as well as for the looks.

h3x

28-01-2006 00:10:18

yeah, i was thinking of overclocking it to the hilt. I need very good multipliers.

his is a bit excessive. If you want a serious gaming rig thats not gonna burn your wallet (as much). Mine clocks in at HALF his cost. I didnt just filter out the highest priced items and use them. These are seriously the best parts on the market. The only thing I would add is maybe a 500 gig IDE HDD. Anyways, here it is https//secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishList/WishDetail.asp?position=HISTORY&ID=1871381&WishListTitle=Insane+as+f%2Ack+compy

My job is to work with computers. If you need help feel free to ask any questions.

(everyone should check out the video card I put on that list)

Aurelius

28-01-2006 01:09:10

who ever said i filtered out the highest prices? i look around enough to know what's gonna give you the most frames/fastest load times.

Aurelius

28-01-2006 01:10:09

and if he's got the insanely deep pockets he has then he can afford to get the x1900xtx which gets about 3 times the frames of a 6800gs

JOSHBOX

28-01-2006 01:11:05

umm did you look at my vid card on the list?

its a dual 7800 gt with 512 dual channel memory.

Aurelius

28-01-2006 01:13:24

go to anandtech and you'll see that one x1900xtx owns the 7800gtx and when the crossfire edition comes out... it's gonna totally blow dual 7800gtx's outa the water

JOSHBOX

28-01-2006 01:17:15

You could always step up and go dual 7800gtx 512 meg cards. Thats 1 gig of sli memory. Anyway. For the 3000$ my computer will save him the exra performance your comp will get will be marginal compared to mine. Def not worth the extra 3 grand. Anyway im tired now so im going to sleep, def not in the mood for a fanboy arguement. Late.

Allen626

28-01-2006 02:40:03

Hex, I do not know if you know this yet or not. But ATI is coming out with a new technology which allows the GPU to encode, making the encoding process 3 or more times faster. This means that you card could capture at even a better bit rate and so forth.

Do I really need 2 VGA ports? I don't even think I need 2 DVI ports.. Like I said, this will be hooked up to my TV at all times.

Wolfeman's makes more sense since it has 2 DVI ports sans the VGA.

I may have money to toss around, but why pay $200 more for 2 VGA ports I will never use?

JOSHBOX

28-01-2006 10:45:09

that video card is SLI in one card. It has 2 cores resulting in 2 dvi and vgas. Your not paying extra for 2 vgas and 2 dvis your paying extra cuz its basicly 2 cards. Look at the back, it has 2 independent 7800gt cores.

Wolfeman

Well I went overboard with the graphics card. They were like 1200. I could switch the MB and get something cheaper there. Also Joshbox's isn't water cooled, if you have the money go with the FX60, and I like my RAID5 setup. If nothing else at least do RAID1 in case a drive dies...

the led's are built onto a metal heatsink. How would a heatsink HELP a memory overheat. Also h3x if you want some cheaper alternatives that will still pwn contact me, im confident I could drop the price another grand and still keep it a kickass computer. As far as water cooling, That zalman fan will be more than sufficent and it will be nice n quiet.

Wolfeman

28-01-2006 12:45:24

But he wants to OC the hell out of it. Thats why I suggested the DFI MB, easier to OC...

Aurelius

28-01-2006 14:53:18

i'm using a tsunami right now with a zalman 7000 alcu and the o/c isn't too good as i can only push it to 2.4ghz prime stable before it craps out. maybe just a bad core. but if you're looking for an air cooling system that's good for o/c i suggest you get a thermalright xp-120 with a decent fan like a panaflo and you'll get a bit more headroom for your temps

my main complaints about the tsunami is that spae is kinda cramped at the top of the case so putting in a psu that isn't especially small will be a major problem. i had to remove the usb ports and the other stuff up there just to fit in my modular psu and that doesn't take up much space. the fan on the side panel also has no filter so be prepared to clean the insides every once in a while. other than that it's a decent case and it looks pretty sweet for the price.

the koolance stuff i recommended is pretty much the best setup for the least ammount of work. only problem is that it's set up in a pretty expensive case already. watercooling isn't worth the price premium but air coolilng simply isn't an option if you're running sli (which you aren't since the vga you chose can't do sli). people ahve also been sayign that the new nvidia high-end cards are coming out in april so it would be smart to just get one evga 7800gt for about $300 and when the new card comes out you can use their replacement program and pay a bit of money and grab the newest card.

So that heatsink doesn't use a fan?

This is the heatsink and fan I got on my AMD64 3500+
ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan with Copper Heatsink

I don't OC, never had much luck with it and I hate my MSI MB...

well i can't use a 7700 on my dfi mobo since it would block the fourth ram slot and be a millimeter away from the third. not sure about that asus motherboard but if you plan on o/c'n that alot you should grab a zalman heatsink for the chipset too.

edit here's the link for the heatsink

WTF would you spend 160 for that dvd burner when you can but the awesome NED-3520 from newegg for around $35

Aurelius

cause it's sata? not that it makes a difference since the stats on the sata and ide versions of the drive are the same.

some games don't have mac support or the performance is lack luster. i really don't see what's so bad about pc's.. if they're slower than mac's in anyway... hell.. i mgiht get a mac )

I haven't read this whole post, but i would definaitally avoid the ASUS A8N SLI deluxe mobo. I had two from newegg not work. The first crapped out after a month, and the second was DOA. From what i read on the Asus forums, a lot of people were having problems with the board.
Thank god they were out of stock the third time, so i just got my money back. I think SLI is over-rated anyway. Now i have a LANparty board and has worked great for me so far.

which mobo would you suggest then?

Most of these guys know more about this stuff than i do. I usually like Asus as a brand, but many poeple have had problems with this specific board. I did quite a bit of research on the Asus forums about it. So i would maybe go with a differnet Asus board or maybe a DFI lanparty, (although i think the boards are pretty ugly and the box it comes in looks like a 12yr designed it.)

Aurelius

tehre's two main overclocking boards that depend on what kind of overclocker you are.

since my budget is low, i bought the dfi lanparty and ocz gold vx memory which uses high voltages (3.3v+) so if you intend on buying ocx vx memory or mushkin redline memory, go with the dfi nforce4 sli expert board

if you're willing to pay a bit more. buy ocz platinum el (make sure it's not vx) or any other memory that uses samsung tccd and the asus board that someone recommended at first.

both boards (asus and dfi) come with lots of overclocking options but the dfi board has higher voltage options and give you a higher overclock without the max multiplier. the asus board paired with tccd ram will give you the higher overclock and lower timings at less voltage which also means less risk but it comes at a slightly higher price.

o and just to tell you that dfi customer support is total crap. i've never dealt with corsair but i hear they have decent enough reps. OCZ by far has the best support center with friendly people who know what they're dealing with and their memory has a lifetime warranty on it regardless of how much you overclocked it as long as you don't exceed the voltage that they specify in the warranty. i accidently burned one of my memory dimm's which was value vx (cost me about $80 at the time) and they replaced it with gold vx (which cost about $130) because they thought it would work better with my setup. can't help but love a free upgrade )

macs are awesome. my powerbook does everything but my pc extracts files faster. i would go with the asus sli-deluxe. i had a problem with the chipset fan but they fixed it. i feel bad for my pc because it is decked out but only use it for htpc. my nec nd-2500a dvd burner is great. upgraded firmware to dual-layer and shit.

kidd, if apple made osx for amd64 processors, i would jump on that shit in a second.

Aurelius

make sure you get this asus a8n32 sli-deluxe and not just the normal a8n because the normal sli-deluxe has less overclocking options and runs sli 8x/8x while the a8n32 runs the pci-e 16x/16x providing for better framerates
