Take a look at this picture... I think I've provided enough data to prove what I need to.

Okay. First if you don't know your california geography, you're messed up. (JK). Since I know most of you don't live here, I'll provide you with the basics. San Francisco is [color=indigo46f69811ef]NORTH[/color46f69811ef] of Los Angeles, and is north of Lancaster, and is north of Ontario.

Second. Los Angeles is [color=indigo46f69811ef]SOUTH[/color46f69811ef] of Lancaster. So Lancaster is in the middle(ish) of LA and San Francisco. Ontario is somewhat near Los Angeles.

Now, according to GoogleMaps, Ontario is 106miles south of Lancaster. So why in the world did UPS send my package all the way to Ontario, just to bring it back to Lancaster?? What a waste of their time.

Lancaster is in the middle of LA and Lancaster?

at first I thought it was Ontario, Canada... that would be really fucked up.

Or maybe since it came from the north, they forgot when to stop sending it south, and it went a little too far? http//forum.freeipodguide.com/smilies_mod/upload/87ccbe9f51f7c97de351c380d03eb0e3.gif[" alt=""/imged4be33509]

Today must be the day that 16 year-olds tell multi-billion dollar multinational enterprises how to do business. Kudos.

It all has to do with regional hubs, and flight/truck schedules. Believe it or not, they don't base their plans for the day on YOUR package.

Well what the fuck kind of bullshit is that?

That's no way to run a business.

My package isn't the point.

The point is that they're wasting resources to ship it out 106 miles only to ship it back those same 106 miles.

106 + 106 = 212 unnecessary miles. The point isn't when my package is going to get to my location.

My point is that they don't have one particular package's route in mind when planning their infrastructure. They're looking for the most efficient overall way to ship [i5c9f520573]everything[/i5c9f520573].

I'm not going to pretend I know exactly how it works, but then again, with the way they've grown exponentially in the last 10 years, I'm not about to question them.

you have a point. And now that I think about it, they could have just stuck it on a truck that was already bound north.... so yea.

I recommend you apply for part-time position (don't worry, you've got to to be there about 10 years before they'll offer you a full-time position) at UPS...I hear its a really easy job. Really. FedEx is just as good. Actually...before you go believing me...loading/unloading at UPS/FedEx is probably the closest thing to slave labor in the US.

I worked for UPS over Xmas Break one year during College. You basically ride along with the regular delivery guy and are supposed to help him out delivering the extra xmas packages. However, in reality, the normal delivery sits in the truck and drives, while you get out in the cold and actually unload/load crap into the truck. but, its temp work at 9 bucks an hour, so. . .

Hehe I was actually contemplating working for UPS as a package handler. They pay pretty good, so I wouldn't call it [if578d9df2b]slave[/if578d9df2b] labor, and the shifts are only like 4 hrs. long.

Kidd

27-01-2006 22:21:50

how much do they pay?

missdee212

28-01-2006 00:16:49

They pay $10 bucks an hour, at least that's here in Chicago. I'd rather work at UPS or FedEx than work in food services and get paid $7 bucks an hour to listen to people bitch and moan, and kids and adults wasting shit every where anyday. But the only thing is when it's cold outside you're cold inside and when it's hot as ever you're 4 times as hott. Let's just be honest all service jobs suck ass.

I work at UPS right now. They run the place like shit. Right now it's cheaper for fedex to ship a package, so they're trying to cut costs by laying people off. But they lay too many people off, so they don't have enough to do the job. I've been layed off twice in the past two weeks, but keep getting asked back. It's really gay.

They're paying 10 or 11 something an hour for that job now.

Before I got layed off I did mainly two things. I corrected bad information/labels in the system and loaded packages into carousels to be loaded onto trucks. I started off at $9.50, and I think it goes up after 3 months. They also give you full benefits that you would usually only get with a full time job and $3000 a year for school.

Those sound like good benefits to me.

Doesn't UPS pay pretty good if you work full time?

Your probably right UPS does seem to waste a lot of time if you don't pay for the faster shipping.. I guess this is to encourage people to use faster forms of there jacked up shipping. That is why I like DHL, never had any mess ups with them.

And I have a question.. how do they pay for gas like does the person driving the truck pay for the gas and then reimbursed... I don't know just seemed a bit wierd to me when I saw a UPS truck filling up it's gas in a local area here..

drummer_kew_03

28-01-2006 16:58:54

UPS has their own pumps at the depots that they use most of the time.
