I have a movie on my desktop that I downloaded from a torrent and I was planning on transfering it over to my Powerbook so I could burn it onto a DVD. I have searched through the internet but it is hard to find a clear answer for what I need to do. I want to burn a DVD that can be viewed through a regular DVD player, not just a computer with a DVD player. Can anyone give me instructions as to how I can go about doing this? Thanks.

You will need to have the movie encoded first. For all my DVD making needs i use NERO Ultraddition. It automatically encodes it and burns it for you so it will work on standard dvd player. The problem is this process usually takes 2 hours + . And since you are using a mac i am not sure if filmcut pro has that ability or I-Movie.

does Imovie have encoding? If so you are pretty much set. I guess you could use Nero and V-Dub and stuff but that will require a lot of ram and Virtual Pc(

since you are going to burn something with your powerbook, use toast 7 platinum.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Trace, I know you have a Powerbook but did you mean Roxio Toast 6 Titanium? Platinum I think is just for photos. I could be wrong though. Do you know if you can do everything with that program as far as using that one program to do everything from compression to making it viewable using a regular DVD player?

usually when you download "scene releases" from torrents or newsgroups, they come in a .binurl==http://=http:///url .cueurl==http://=http:///url format, ready to burn. If I were you, I would just download scene releases as they are already encoded to whatever media it is for. Stay away from .avi'surl==http://=http:///url and stuff unless you are just watching on your computer.

Yeah, it is a scene release and it comes in a BIN format. So I should just use any program on my Mac, maybe even iDVD and just burn it using that file, then it will be viewable on a DVD player with those capabilities? It would be nice not to have to convert the file or anything.

not really sure about a mac, but any image burning program will burn a bin/cue. On my PC I use nero, so im sure any mac program that can burn images will be able to handle it. Once it burned it will act as any regular dvd.

edit - I just googled it, and it doesnt look like bin and cues work well with macs. here is a little article, maybe it will help http//www.command-tab.com/index.php/dealing-with-bincue-files-on-a-mac/ also http//forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240115

I also wouldn't wanna burn anything I just downloaded w/o verifying the data first. Use something like http//www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php[]http//www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php . It allows you to add virtual cd/dvd-roms so you can mount .bin/.cueurl==http://=http:///url files to test them first. But that's just me, I don't like wasting $ on corrupt DVDs.

Edit hehe, I rhymed roll

I dont usually do that, if the bin/cue can be extracted from the rars, then its going to be all right. Also, its not bad to read replys to what you download, i know most torrent sites have a reply area, and newzbin.com does too, so usually if there is a bad release (have only seen one in my 3+ years of using newsgroups) someone will say something.
