can i get a HD and partition it so that half can be used by a windows computer and the other half can be used by a mac?

well, Tiger can read NTFS partitions (which xp uses) but can't write to it (yet). I bet there is a 3rd party driver that lets OSX write to NTFS.
You could probally do a 50/50.
Another option would be to partition the external drive as FAT32, as then both XP and OSX could read/write. Only problem with that is the 32GB partition limitation, so you would need to make multiple partitions.
Yet another option is format the drive as mac HFS+ (which has no such limitations) and then get MacDrive for the PC, which will allow it to read HFS+ partitions.
